The Josh was High
The second day yesterday started at 6.00 AM with PT with Rana but as usual there was no fear of dies non many preferred to rest or take a leisure walk to Atal (Company) Garden. After a bath all members with their spouses participated in the fun hour of lemon and spoon race, musical chairs and tug of war competition. We thought Mahendra would win the lemon and spoon race but Srikant Baldi moved faster and Sanjeev Ranjan took it away. We all know that the lemon can't stay without the spoon and the spoon can't without the lemon! Mrs Sushila Samariya though had fever proved herself a dark horse winning Musical Chairs though Kavita ran upto runner up three with some faults. Sushila proved herself a power behind Hiralal’s success to not to leave the chair! Winners were awarded with dark chocolates that was shared by all. Jyotish was a favourite item but time was too short to see many horoscopes. The breakfast enjoyed thereafter with South Indian Idly and North Indian Paratha was delicious. Under a bright Sunshine, a formal programme took place ‘introduction with Director’ with felicitation, release of memories and group photographs. Prabhat and Surina shared their lessons of life and Sanjeev Chopra spoke words of wisdom. Dr. Prabhat's five Is could be the Is of many. The Director remembered some of us by name as he had good association of working with them in past. A frame of painting made on silk was presented to the Director as a symbol of our love to the academy. The lunch hosted by the Director was delicious. Evening resumed with the cultural programme. गाड़ी तो चलाना है, we missed our late Ram Niwas but his daughter Tarranum filled the space with her powerful singing गाड़ी को चलाना बाबू जरा हल्के हल्के हल्के. The programme formally started with Ganesh Vandana was followed by a beautiful couple dance of Anita and Ashu. Ashu was more rhythmic and youthful won many hearts. Archana and UP had sweet squabble with Shayari but neither of them winner or loser. The Medley by IAS Women Officers was catching eyes with rhythmic movements of Usha and Amita. The Safarnama of 1985 presented by Sudhir Tripathi in लखनवी तहज़ीब अदब और नज़ाकत was clean super made us more proud of our batch. The journey of our life as public servants and the journey of life our spouses presented through sonic time capsules of Hindi songs made us joyful. The team of dozen lead by Archana (w/o UP Singh) performed so well that double to them lead by Sanjay Ubale tried but couldn’t win. The home makers could tell us सायोंनारा but we the dependents could only say that कभी अलविदा न कहना. Home ministry always on a driving seat and more when the guys retired. The grand finale ‘bele’ 'dance of duty with grace' directed by Arun Arya and performed by ‘the nine’ was superb with it dress, stick and stylised dance courtships. Their moves to the rhythm of drum made the dance attractive. The question mark tried to break their courtship but the touch of ‘service’ reunited them. Tall RK Tiwari and Short Girish Murmu and in between our thin Mahendra and fatty Bhabu with beautiful lady partner filled the stage with romance. Renuka as a monitor, comparer and player was excellent. The last supper was tasty with a sweet dish of ‘rose khir’. And बाक़ी जो बचा था, all our जोश came out in front of the DJ (disc jokey); once again the home makers never tired against the retired. It was played and enjoyed with full energy.
The RRB@40 took away 40 years from our ageing and brought us back to our academy days of youthfulness. In 1985, we came here as a group of nana bhasha nana mat nana paridhan but the academy groomed us as efficient public servants, a bonding and stimulating agent of Indian Nation. It satisfies us that we have served the nation and its people with the best of our ability and contributed in its growth journey in last four decades.
Kudos to the organising team made the RRB@40 made successful and amemorable. We are ageing but our soul and mind are young and energetic therefore pledge to meet again in RRB@50 in 2035. 👋

Reunion@1985 at Mussoorie: Day1
Reunion@1985 at Mussoorie (28-30 April 2025)
It was a grand the first day of our get together at LBSNAA in Mussoorie yesterday. It was an experience of meeting the family members after a long break. We were never divorced but were dispersed in different states to perform public service therefore it is not reunion but a celebration of our joy of journey through IAS in last forty years.
The formal programme began with memorial service of paying homage to our ten dear colleagues who left us earlier leaving their fragrance of success stories and services to humanity. The journey video of the batch presented by Ravikant was marvellous, picked up our moments of fun and ferry where the ladies had their day. Cadre stage walk was unexpectedly went very well by presenting glimpses of the culture of different states with a popular backdrop song of the respective state. How best was our adoption of the life style, dress and culture of the state which is not our home state but our workplace (कर्मभूमि) for more than three decades. It was truly a show of unity in diversity. The musical night brought back our joy in old songs of our generation. Vandana is a singer present herself the best. Anubha is universal sang well. Pawan’s wife Monika was one of the best with Sur and Taal. UP’s wife Archana also sang very well. The melodious couple of the evening Anita and Ashu not only sang very well but performed with emotions. Mahendra sang his great love for the friends. Sanjay Ubale and Sanjay Bhatia can fill their presence on any stage. Saraswati is our yadon ji barat of four decades. Bhanu sang two words but pumped joy and humour on the stage and Renuka’s gazal was an out of blue loved by all. Tripurari presented his love for his favourite Saigal sang a song of 1943. RK Tiwari’s tabala play made the evening trikit dhum. Sangram sang and compared the show well with his presence felt in each song. It was memorable musical night overlapped with dinner time after an hour therefore sparsely presented when the video song of Ram Niwas was played.
Dinner of the academy reminded its taste after a long gap with sabji of jackfruit, mushroom, dal-rice, roti, curd, salad, papad and mohanbhog in sweet.
The day has a sad moment to record as Divya wife of Sudhir Tripathi got injured in a car accident while coming to Mussoorie when they were just 9 kilometres away from the academy. It invited 15 stitches on her forehead. The driver lost the control of the car, hit it with the railing and a pole. The car was smashed but luckily the rallying saved them (4) from a free fall into the valley by the grace of God.
The academy has been transformed over the years with some additions of new buildings and alterations of old buildings. It has now better infrastructure and facilities. The bust of Lal Bahadur Shastri turned full statue and the bust Sardar Patel reminded his pivotal role in establishing IAS which has bonded the states of India in firm union. IT has an edge in training young administrators. Elevators in the buildings have eased the legs of the probationers. Food is the same but improved water quality eased our stomach. Most of us were given accommodation in Monastery Estate building as we are in the age of living in monastery. But it is no less than a five star hotel accommodation with big size rooms fully furnished and a gym to try our fitness test. We have enjoyed the day and when climbed into the bed of the academy, our journey from 1985 to 2025 went in a flashback. LBSNAA is our first and everlasting love when it comes to our carrier.

Cardiac Care through Nuclear Test Heart
Cardiac Care through Nuclear Test Heart
Khyati Hospital episode in Gujarat drew our attention towards the misuse of govt scheme for financial gain in the name of medicare. When Govt Scheme or Mediclaim is there in support, hospital, a commercial entity tends to slip easily from a bill of ₹7000 for angiography to a bill of ₹70000 for angioplasty. Bypass surgery or angioplasty of a asymptomatic persons is a matter of research and debate in the medical world.
Our life line is fixed at birth is a faith sentence followed by millions in this religious country. But allopathy has proved it wrong and many people have survived longer with the help of surgical and medical interventions. But what about use of the services of the doctor already placed in our body by the Almighty? If the blood supply to the heart is blocked by arteriosclerosis, the nature develops collaterals. There are individuals who survive and live quality life even if the LAD and RCA are blocked. My eldest brother had 95% blockage of LAD, and major blockage of the RCA, was advised for bypass surgery in 2019. He was about to leave for OT but we saw him and my sister in law in depression and mentally unprepared, took discharge from the hospital and manage him with medicines and lifestyle changes for last six years. Touchwood, he is going well at 82.
There are individuals live healthy life even the LVEF has come down to 20%. Important part of the cure is to change the food and life style according to one’s need. This week, I met Dr. Gopal Maheshwari (67) who was HoD in GCRI, took VRS when came to know that his LVEF had come down to 21%. He was asymptomatic but obese with a body weight of 93 kg. He put his efforts on food restrictions and became punctual in medicine, pulled down his weight to 70 kg and living a healthy life without any intervention of angioplasty or bypass surgery. He could climb the stairs as good as a healthy person and was looking very energetic and active while interacting with me.
Is angioplasty or open heart surgery is the only option for curing heart blockages? If there are blockages identified through the angiography, is it mendatory to intervene through angioplasty or bypass surgery for as asymptomatic person is a big question mark. Each individual may have different answer depending upon his/her understanding. But nuclear stress test is a wonderful option to review the blood flow to the heart first and thereafter evaluate the option to go for other intervention or not. Listen to the patient first before looking at his blockages. If he is fine, living a normal life without any intervention with the help of the collaterals developed by the nature why to put him in the stress of bypass surgery or making him a slave of blood thinner by putting a stent in his heart arteries?
What is nuclear stress test?
It is popularly known as thallium stress test, conducted to assess heart blood flow during rest and stress. Thallium201 is very expensive and is not available in India, therefore, small amount of radioactive tracer Technetium99 is injected intravenous for conduction of the test. It acts as a tracer, into the bloodstream. Special Gamma cameras then capture images of the heart as the radioactive isotopes travels through it, revealing areas with reduced blood flow. The test is typically done in two phases: one at rest and one while the heart is stressed, either through exercise or medication. The procedure of the test takes 4-5 hours. One has to consume good quantity of butter to clear the liver after the injection of isotopes so that the image of right heart blood flow is captured correctly. Once the images are taken in rest condition, thereafter stress is generated either through treadmill or meditations often called pharmacological stress agent to mimic the effects of exercise. One has to undergo Gamma camera images once again. If all the basal-antero-lateral regions of the heart are getting enough blood supply in rest as well as in stress condition without major changes in the ECG, there may be no need of any surgical or other major interventions. One can manage the life with life style changes and medicines. For those, who are in emergency of ischemia, myocardial infraction, heart attack/arrest, golden hour treatment of thrombotic drugs (alteplase/activase etc) and subsequent intervention of angioplasty of surgery (minimally invasive, open heart) may be necessary to save life. But for the asymptomatic individuals or persons with minor complaint, better to go first through the nuclear stress test and thereafter do angiography and opt for angioplasty and bypass surgery if there is issue of blood flow management during rest and stress conditions. One may follow the cardiologist/surgeon advice after the test.
Nuclear Stress Test is a good benchmark test can be used in comparing heart health in future and opt for suitable intervention to manage the life of the heart. Medical science is changing very fast. Who knows man may discover a chemical that can remove the arteriosclerosis of the arteries and veins without surgical interventions. Heart transplant has also opened a door to extend lifeline.
There is preparation stage 24 hours before the nuclear stress test by avoiding tea, coffee, coco etc., which may intervene in the process of the test. Except water nothing is allowed in the morning hours on the day of the test. One may drink water, enjoy lassi and meal rich in fat after the isotopes are injected. After the test is concluded one has to drink plenty of water and urinate frequently so that the radioactive substance is washed out faster. Body removes it in about 12-18 hours. The test dose is mild but better to keep oneself away (3 feet) from other individuals and avoid meeting children for a day.

Autobiography of Poet Narmad
Autobiography of Poet Narmad
“મારી હકીકત” in an autobiography of Poet Narmadashankar Lalshankar Dave in Gujarati, describes his journey of life in the mid of 19th century. His prose is not good like his poems however it’s a good document to read to understand society, customs, history and life of people under British rule those days.
It was the time when varna of individuals were identified with suffix after name; Brahmin used શર્મ, Kshatriya વર્મ, Vaishya ગુપ્ત and Shudra દાસ. He was Narmadashankar Sharm. His surname was Dave corruption of Dwivedi the students and reciters of Rigveda and Yajurveda. They were worshipers of Lord Shiva, therefore males had Shankar and female had Gauri as suffix to their names. His name was Narmadashankar and his wives were Gulabgauri, Dahyagauri, (Subhadra) Narmadagauri.
His ancestors were from Anandpur to Vadnagar of North Gujarat. Many Nagar Brahmin including Narsinh Mehta were known as Vadnagara Brahmin. The town of Vadnagar was plundered thrice; in 588 by Maletch (non Vedic invaders), in 1215 by the successors of Ghori and in 1725 by the Maratha. In one of those events, his ancestors migrated from Vadnagar to Champaner. Champaner was won by Mahmud Begada of Ahmedabad with the help of Rav Kshatriya of Idar in 1484. The last ruler of Champaner Raval Jesang (known as Patai Raja) though supported by the Muslim ruler of Malwa but was defeated. To avoid atrocities by the Muslim his ancestors moved from Champaner to Surat. Many of the Nagar Brahmin had migrated from Vadnagar to other parts of Gujarat that was Patan, Siddhpur, Idar, Junagadh, Chanpaner, Surat, Mumbai etc.
He couldn’t finish his college education though tried twice but was good at algebra and geometry and had studied Sanskrit and English, therefore got a job of a teacher and later served as Asst Headmaster but was brave enough to leave the job and passed his life with the support of pen. He managed his livelihood, publications and literary work with the help of fees and donations. Those days, one could get a job with a recommendation letter of known person of the recruiter. British officers were keeping teachers to learn vernacular language. The status of government clerk was superior to traders and Pandits. Gujarati sheth were earning good through share trading.
A reformist in him is more dominant than a poet in his notes. Caste Society was such orthodox that one had to take its permission to go abroad. Widow marriage was prohibited. Narmad faced boycott of his ન્યાત (society) for supporting widow marriage. The reformist managed one widow marriage. The society boycotted the couple and the oppose was so strong that when the woman died her body remained unattended for hours as none was ready to see the face of the dead body.
He advocated widow marriage and married to a widow though had a living wife.
His reformist mind opposed the inequality prevailed within his Nagar Brahmin caste where the society was divided into householders (ગૃહસ્થ) and beggars (ભિક્ષુક) in which the previous had source of income through jobs while the later was dependent on donation (દક્ષિણા). The social status of the Bhikshuk group of Brahmin was so lower that their wives had to eat community meal without wearing upper body garment while the householder women could. He gathered a poor impression (immoral acts) about the Brahmin women of Chanod and Kanyali (Karnali).
He was growing up in poetry while Dalpatram was an established poet. But when he compared his works with him he felt himself superior as he went through the organised path of making poems by using sutras of Pingal. He believed that for a good poetry one should have immagination, idea and logic covered with the clothes of language. He was a great poet, the founder of modern Gujarati literature. His poem જય જય ગરવી ગુજરાત written in 1873 is our State anthem.
