Atma - the Soul

आत्मा । 

आत्मा का स्वरूप—चाहे वह व्यक्तिगत हो या सार्वभौमिक—भारतीय दर्शन के दर्शनों में एक प्रमुख विमर्श का विषय रहा है। अनेक पाश्चात्य धार्मिक परम्पराएँ व्यक्तिगत आत्मा या आत्मिक सत्ता को स्वीकार करती हैं, जिसका भाग्य स्वर्ग या नरक में ईश्वर द्वारा निर्धारित किया जाता है। इसके विपरीत, गौतम बुद्ध ने स्थायी आत्मा की अवधारणा को अलग रखते हुए मन पर बल दिया। उन्होंने सिखाया कि मन को समझकर और साधकर मनुष्य दुःखों से मुक्त हो सकता है।

वेदान्त इस विचार को और परिष्कृत करता है और आत्मा को सार्वभौमिक चेतना के रूप में परिभाषित करता है—सत् (नित्य अस्तित्व) और चित् (शुद्ध चेतना)—जो एक है और सबमें समान रूप से विद्यमान है, जैसे आकाश। जिसे हम सामान्यतः व्यक्तिगत आत्मा कहते हैं, वह व्यापक अर्थ में मन है, उसके उपकरण—इन्द्रियाँ—और इच्छाओं से जुड़ा हुआ तंत्र। इन्हीं इच्छाओं की पूर्ति के लिए यह जन्म-मृत्यु के चक्र में प्रवाहित होता रहता है।

इस प्रकार, जो लोग इच्छाओं से मुक्त हो जाते हैं, वे इस चक्र से छूट जाते हैं; जबकि आसक्त व्यक्ति बार-बार जन्म लेते रहते हैं, जब तक वे मोक्ष को प्राप्त न कर लें। फिर भी, मृत्यु के बाद जीवन का कोई प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण नहीं है: न मृत व्यक्ति लौटकर इसकी पुष्टि करते हैं, न ही नवजात अपने पूर्व जन्म का स्पष्ट विवरण देते हैं। तथापि, हम देखते हैं कि इस ब्रह्माण्ड में कुछ भी पूर्णतः नष्ट नहीं होता; वह केवल रूप बदलता है। इस दृष्टि से, सार्वभौमिक चेतना भी ऊर्जा की भाँति नित्य है, जो विभिन्न नामों और रूपों में प्रकट होती रहती है।

मृत शरीर, चाहे उसका दाह संस्कार किया जाए या उसे दफनाया जाए, वापस नहीं आता। परन्तु यह प्रश्न अभी भी खुला है कि क्या मन—जो गहरी नींद जैसी अवस्था में चला जाता है—किसी नए शरीर को प्राप्त कर अपनी यात्रा जारी रखता है। आस्तिक इस निरन्तरता को स्वीकार करते हैं, जबकि तर्कशील मन अभी निर्णय स्थगित रखता है।

उच्चतम दृष्टिकोण से, सार्वभौमिक सत्ता—जिसे ईश्वर या शुद्ध चेतना कहा जाता है—नित्य है और जन्म-मृत्यु से परे है। उसके लिए न कोई चक्र है, न पुनर्जन्म।

Atma - Soul

The nature of Ātman—whether individual or universal—has been a central debate in the darśanas of Indian philosophy. Many Western religious traditions accept the idea of an individual soul or spirit, governed by God, who determines its destiny in heaven or hell. In contrast, Gautama Buddha set aside the concept of a permanent Ātman and instead emphasized the mind. He taught that by understanding and cultivating the mind, one can become free from suffering.

The Vedāntic tradition further refines this inquiry by defining Ātman as universal consciousness—Sat (eternal existence) and Chit (pure awareness)—which is one and common to all, like space. What is often called the individual self is, in a broader sense, the mind along with its instruments—the senses—driven by desires. To fulfill these desires, it moves through the cycle of birth and death.

Accordingly, those who transcend desire are freed from this cycle, while those who remain attached continue to be reborn until they attain liberation. Yet, there is no empirical confirmation of life after death: the dead do not return to testify, nor do newborns recall verifiable past lives. Still, we observe that nothing in the universe is truly destroyed; it only changes form. In that sense, universal consciousness, like energy, may be understood as eternal, manifesting through countless names and forms.

The physical body, once cremated or buried, does not return. But whether the mind—after entering a state akin to deep sleep—continues its journey by taking on a new body remains an open question. Believers accept this continuity, while a rational mind may suspend judgment.

From the highest standpoint, the universal Being—whether called God or pure consciousness—is eternal and beyond birth and death. For That, there is no cycle at all.
