Cohesion and Expansion of Universe

The universe is the continuous unfolding and enfolding of consciousness.

Redshift, the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), and large-scale structure are regarded as three of the principal pillars of modern cosmology. Redshift shows that the light from distant galaxies is shifted toward the red end of the spectrum, leading to the conclusion that the space between galaxies is expanding. The CMB is a faint radiation permeating the entire universe, interpreted as the residual light from an early state when the universe was extremely hot and dense. Large-scale structure reveals that galaxies are organized into a vast cosmic web that has evolved over time under the influence of gravity. Taken together, these observations lead scientists to conclude that the universe was once much hotter and denser and has been evolving and expanding ever since, although the ultimate cause of this expansion and the fundamental nature of space remain subjects of ongoing research.

One possible philosophical view is that at the foundation of the universe lies an eternal, infinite, and all-pervading energy or reality from which matter, elements, and all forms emerge. What appears to us as the expansion of the universe may not necessarily be a literal stretching of space alone; it could be the visible consequence of a deeper process of contraction, transformation, vibration, or reorganization within that primordial reality—much as a process occurring within a balloon manifests outwardly as its inflation. Modern science accepts cosmic expansion and the effects attributed to dark energy, yet the ultimate nature of space, energy, and matter remains unresolved. Therefore, such hypotheses may be philosophically meaningful, even though they have not been experimentally established.

In Kashmir Shaivism, the ultimate reality is not regarded as an inert substance but as both Prakāśa (self-luminous awareness) and Vimarśa (self-reflection or self-awareness). Prakāśa is pure consciousness that shines by itself; Vimarśa is consciousness knowing itself.

Paramaśiva = Infinite, undivided consciousness
Its inherent Spanda = Creative pulsation
From Spanda arises Icchā (Will)
From Will arises Jñāna (Knowledge)
From Knowledge arises Kriyā (Action)
From Action emerges the manifestation of the elements and the cosmos

From this perspective, creation is not fashioned from an external material. Rather, it is the self-manifestation of the same supreme consciousness.

Just as a movie appears upon a screen while the screen itself remains unchanged, the entire universe manifests within a fundamental consciousness. The world is therefore not merely an illusion to be dismissed; it is understood as a real expression of Shiva’s power.

Kashmir Shaiva texts also speak of Unmeṣa (unfolding, expansion) and Nimeṣa (withdrawal, contraction):

• Unmeṣa → manifestation, creation
• Nimeṣa → dissolution, reabsorption

The expansion of the universe is viewed as the joyous self-expression of the Absolute, while dissolution is that expression returning to and contracting into its source.

Modern science neither proves nor disproves this vision. Science simply tells us that we observe expansion, redshift, the CMB, and related phenomena. The question, “What is the ultimate reality behind these observations?” lies beyond the scope of empirical science and enters the domain of philosophy.

Interestingly, the Spanda doctrine of Kashmir Shaivism and the concepts of field fluctuations, vacuum dynamics, and quantum fields in modern physics are not identical, yet they appear to share a similar intuition: beneath apparently stable reality lies a dynamic, creative, and all-pervading ground.

According to modern physics, the universe is fundamentally composed of various quantum fields that permeate all of space. Particles and matter are merely localized excitations or waves within these fields. Even what we call a vacuum or empty space is not truly empty; it contains continuous microscopic fluctuations. Because of this active and dynamic character of the vacuum, particles can briefly appear and disappear, energy is present even in apparent emptiness, and phenomena such as dark energy may be related to this underlying activity. In simple terms, modern physics envisions an invisible, universal background whose subtle fluctuations give rise to matter, energy, and the structures of the cosmos.

The crucial difference is that modern physics does not presently regard this underlying reality as conscious, whereas Kashmir Shaivism understands it as intrinsically self-aware. In that view, the universe is not a lifeless mechanical event but the ceaseless unfolding and enfolding of consciousness itself.

ब्रह्मांड चेतना का निरंतर उन्मेष निमेष। 

रेडशिफ्ट, कॉस्मिक माइक्रोवेव बैकग्राउंड (CMB) और लार्ज-स्केल स्ट्रक्चर आधुनिक ब्रह्माण्ड विज्ञान के तीन प्रमुख प्रमाण माने जाते हैं। रेडशिफ्ट दिखाता है कि दूरस्थ आकाशगंगाओं का प्रकाश लाल दिशा में खिसका हुआ है, जिससे निष्कर्ष निकाला जाता है कि उनके बीच का अंतरिक्ष फैल रहा है। CMB पूरे ब्रह्माण्ड में फैला वह सूक्ष्म विकिरण है जिसे प्रारंभिक, अत्यंत गर्म और सघन ब्रह्माण्ड का अवशिष्ट प्रकाश माना जाता है। लार्ज-स्केल स्ट्रक्चर बताता है कि आकाशगंगाएँ एक ब्रह्माण्डीय जाल (Cosmic Web) के रूप में संगठित हैं, जो समय के साथ गुरुत्वाकर्षण द्वारा विकसित हुआ। इन तीनों प्रेक्षणों को मिलाकर वैज्ञानिक यह निष्कर्ष निकालते हैं कि ब्रह्माण्ड कभी अधिक सघन और गर्म अवस्था में था तथा तब से निरंतर विकसित और विस्तारित हो रहा है, यद्यपि इस विस्तार के मूल कारण और अंतरिक्ष की अंतिम प्रकृति अभी भी अनुसंधान के विषय हैं।

एक संभावना यह हो सकती है कि ब्रह्माण्ड के मूल में कोई अनादि-अनंत, सर्वव्यापी ऊर्जा या सत्ता हो, जिससे पदार्थ, तत्व और समस्त रूप प्रकट होते हों। जो हमें ब्रह्माण्ड का विस्तार दिखाई देता है, वह आवश्यक नहीं कि केवल अंतरिक्ष का वास्तविक फैलाव हो; वह उस मूल सत्ता के किसी गहरे स्तर के संकोच, रूपांतरण, स्पन्दन या पुनर्संयोजन का प्रत्यक्ष प्रभाव भी हो सकता है—जैसे किसी गुब्बारे के भीतर की प्रक्रिया बाहर उसके फूलने के रूप में दिखाई दे। आधुनिक विज्ञान अभी ब्रह्माण्ड के विस्तार और डार्क एनर्जी के प्रभाव को स्वीकार करता है, पर अंतरिक्ष, ऊर्जा और पदार्थ की अंतिम प्रकृति क्या है, यह प्रश्न अभी खुला है; इसलिए ऐसी परिकल्पनाएँ दार्शनिक रूप से सार्थक हैं, यद्यपि अभी प्रायोगिक रूप से सिद्ध नहीं हैं।

काश्मीर शैवमत में परम तत्त्व को केवल जड़ सत्ता नहीं माना जाता, बल्कि प्रकाश (Prakāśa) और विमर्श (Vimarśa) दोनों माना जाता है। प्रकाश अर्थात् स्वप्रकाशित चैतन्य, और विमर्श अर्थात् उस चैतन्य का स्वयं को जानना।

• परमशिव = अनन्त, अखण्ड चैतन्य
• उसका स्वाभाविक स्पन्द = सृजनात्मक कम्पन
• स्पन्द से इच्छा (इच्छाशक्ति)
• इच्छा से ज्ञान (ज्ञानशक्ति)
• ज्ञान से क्रिया (क्रियाशक्ति)
• क्रिया से तत्त्वों और जगत की अभिव्यक्ति

इस दृष्टि से सृष्टि किसी बाहरी सामग्री से नहीं बनाई जाती, बल्कि उसी परम चैतन्य का स्व-प्रकटीकरण (self-manifestation) है।

जैसे चलचित्र पर्दे पर चलता है, पर पर्दा स्वयं नहीं बदलता; वैसे ही समस्त जगत एक आधारभूत चैतन्य में प्रकट होता है। वहाँ जगत अद्वैत की माया नहीं, बल्कि शिव की वास्तविक शक्ति का विस्तार माना जाता है।

उन्मेष (खुलना, विस्तार) और निमेष (समेटना, संकोच) की अवधारणाएँ भी शैव आगमों में मिलती हैं।

• उन्मेष → अभिव्यक्ति, सृष्टि
• निमेष → लय, संकोच

ब्रह्माण्ड का विस्तार परम की उल्लासपूर्ण अभिव्यक्ति है।

और विलय उस अभिव्यक्ति का पुनः अपने स्रोत में संकोच है।

यह विचार आधुनिक विज्ञान से न तो सिद्ध होता है, न खण्डित। विज्ञान केवल इतना कहता है कि हम विस्तार, रेडशिफ्ट, CMB आदि देखते हैं। “उसके पीछे अंतिम वास्तविकता क्या है?” — यह प्रश्न विज्ञान की सीमा से बाहर जाकर दर्शन का प्रश्न बन जाता है।

दिलचस्प बात यह है कि काश्मीर शैवमत का स्पन्द सिद्धान्त और आधुनिक भौतिकी का “field fluctuations”, “vacuum dynamics”, या “quantum fields” शब्दशः समान नहीं हैं, पर दोनों में एक समान अंतर्ज्ञान दिखाई देता है: स्थिर दिखने वाली वास्तविकता के मूल में कोई गतिशील, सृजनात्मक, सर्वव्यापी आधार है।

आधुनिक भौतिकी के अनुसार ब्रह्माण्ड मूलतः विभिन्न क्वांटम क्षेत्रों (quantum fields) से बना है, जो पूरे अंतरिक्ष में व्याप्त हैं। कण और पदार्थ इन क्षेत्रों की स्थानीय उत्तेजनाएँ या तरंगें मात्र हैं। यहाँ तक कि जिसे हम निर्वात (vacuum) या खाली स्थान कहते हैं, वह भी वास्तव में पूर्णतः खाली नहीं होता, बल्कि उसमें निरंतर सूक्ष्म स्पन्दन या उतार-चढ़ाव (field fluctuations) होते रहते हैं। निर्वात की इसी सक्रिय और गतिशील प्रकृति (vacuum dynamics) के कारण क्षणिक कणों का उदय-विलय, ऊर्जा की उपस्थिति और संभवतः डार्क एनर्जी जैसी घटनाएँ उत्पन्न होती हैं। सरल शब्दों में, आधुनिक भौतिकी एक ऐसी अदृश्य सर्वव्यापी पृष्ठभूमि की कल्पना करती है, जिसके सूक्ष्म स्पन्दनों से पदार्थ, ऊर्जा और ब्रह्माण्ड की संरचनाएँ प्रकट होती हैं।

अंतर यह है कि आधुनिक भौतिकी उसे अभी चेतन नहीं मानती, जबकि काश्मीर शैवमत उस मूल सत्ता को स्वयं-चेतन (self-aware) मानता है। जहाँ ब्रह्माण्ड कोई निर्जीव यांत्रिक घटना नहीं, बल्कि चैतन्य का निरंतर उन्मेष और निमेष है।
