A Dialogue on the Soul, Karma, and Liberation — A Conversation Between Jainism, Buddhism, and Vedānta

Seeker: Jain philosophy speaks of terms such as kaṣāya (passions), vītarāga (freedom from attachment), pudgala (matter), sāgaropama (an inconceivably vast measure of time), and koḍākoḍi (countless millions). What is their central meaning?

Jain Teacher: The soul is eternal. However, due to passions such as anger, pride, deceit, and greed, karmic matter (pudgala) binds itself to the soul. This bondage continues through innumerable births. When all passions are completely destroyed, the soul attains Kevala Jñāna (omniscience) and ultimately becomes a Siddha—a liberated being.

Who is God?

Seeker: Does Jainism believe in God?

Jain Teacher: Yes, but not in a Creator God. God is a soul that has become completely free from karma. Such a liberated being neither governs the universe nor grants liberation through grace. He is the perfect ideal.

Seeker: So there can be infinitely many Gods, yet none of them can intervene on behalf of others?

Jain Teacher: Correct. Every soul is solely responsible for its own karma. No one can liberate another.

Who is a Kevali?

Seeker: What is the difference between an Arihant, a Kevali, a Tirthankara, and a Siddha?

Jain Teacher:

  • Kevali: One who has attained perfect knowledge (Kevala Jñāna).
  • Arihant: A Kevalin who has conquered all inner passions.
  • Tirthankara: An Arihant who establishes a spiritual path (tirtha) for others.
  • Siddha: A completely liberated soul after the death of the body.

What is Kevala Jñāna?

Seeker: Does it simply mean knowing one’s own past lives?

Jain Teacher: No. According to Jain tradition, a Kevalin simultaneously knows the entire universe and beyond, every soul, every atom, and all events of the past, present, and future.

Seeker: Is there any Kevalin alive today?

Jain Teacher: Not in Bharata Kṣetra (our world-region). According to tradition, no one attains Kevala Jñāna during the Fifth Era. However, Jain belief holds that Tirthankaras continue to exist in Mahāvideha Kṣetra.

Evidence?

Seeker: Is there any historical proof that Mahavira possessed omniscience?

Jain Teacher: Jain scriptures and tradition affirm it. However, there is no independent historical or scientific evidence that can verify it in the modern sense.

The Fifth Era

Seeker: When did the Fifth Era begin?

Jain Teacher: After Mahavira’s Nirvāṇa. It lasts for 21,000 years, after which the Sixth Era begins.

Seeker: Then does that mean no one can attain omniscience or liberation for roughly the next 42,000 years?

Jain Teacher: That is what the traditional doctrine teaches.

The First Dilemma

Seeker: This seems paradoxical. Human intelligence has reached its highest development today, yet the doors to omniscience are said to be closed. In earlier ages, when humanity was supposedly less developed, Tirthankaras and Kevalins appeared.

Jain Teacher: Jainism distinguishes intellectual ability from spiritual capacity. Cosmic time influences spiritual attainment.

Seeker: Yet the philosophical question remains.

The Second Dilemma

Seeker: If there are infinite souls, infinite time, infinitely many beings in Nigoda, only comparatively few Siddhas, and no liberation is possible for thousands of years, what is the purpose of spiritual practice today?

Jain Teacher: Spiritual practice prevents the accumulation of new karma.

Seeker: Then the immediate purpose of practice is not liberation, but freedom from passions?

Jain Teacher: That would be a fair way of putting it.

The Third Dilemma

Seeker: In the story of Marubhuti and Kamatha, Kamatha binds karma through hatred, yet Marubhuti suffers over many lifetimes. Isn’t he suffering because of another person’s karma?

Jain Teacher: Jain doctrine says no one experiences the fruits of another’s karma. Kamatha is merely the external cause (nimitta). Marubhuti suffers only because of his own past karma.

Seeker: Then why does the story not explain Marubhuti’s own karma?

The Fourth Dilemma

Seeker: Pleasure and pain are determined by past karma. The only freedom available is whether to react with attachment and aversion. One simply passes through life with equanimity. No seeker knows when liberation will come. Even the desire for liberation may itself be the result of past karma.

Jain Teacher: That is indeed a profound interpretation of Jain karma theory.

The Buddha Enters

Seeker: Buddhism also prevents new karma through the Noble Eightfold Path. What, then, is the difference?

Buddhist Monk: The difference lies in the concept of the self.

Jainism says the soul is eternal.

I say that what you call the self is merely a stream of the Five Aggregates (Skandhas).

Seeker: Then who is reborn?

Monk: A chain of causes and effects continues. One lamp lights another. It is neither exactly the same flame nor entirely different.

Seeker: What remains after Nirvāṇa?

Monk: The question itself is misplaced. Asking where a flame goes after it is extinguished has no meaningful answer.

Seeker: Do you accept cosmic cycles, eras, Nigoda, and countless realms of existence?

Monk: Samsāra is beginningless. There are countless births and many realms of existence. But my concern is not the structure of the cosmos; it is the ending of suffering.

The Vedāntin Enters

Seeker: What do you teach?

Vedāntin: Here lies the fundamental difference.

The Self is never born.

The Self never dies.

What is born is the subtle body.

Seeker: Then what survives death?

Vedāntin: The subtle body—comprising mind, intellect, memory, ego, vital energies, and karmic impressions.

The gross body perishes.

The subtle body takes another body.

Seeker: Then what is liberation?

Vedāntin: When ignorance (avidyā) is destroyed, the subtle body no longer has any cause to assume another birth.

The Self never goes anywhere.

It has always been free.

The Three Philosophies Together

Jainism:
There are infinitely many eternal souls.

Each soul is distinct.

Even after liberation, every soul remains an individual.

Buddhism:
There is no permanent self.

There is only an ever-changing process.

The end of craving is Nirvāṇa.

Vedānta:
There is only one Self.

Individuality arises from ignorance.

When knowledge dawns, all separation disappears.

The Fourth Observer Speaks

A thoughtful observer, watching all three traditions from a distance, asks:

“Is it possible that all three are describing the same human problem in different languages?”

Jainism says:

Abandon passions.

Buddhism says:

Abandon craving.

Vedānta says:

Abandon ignorance.

All three teach the relinquishment of anger, greed, ego, and attachment.

All three value self-discipline.

All three emphasize meditation.

All three insist on ethical living.

Their difference lies primarily in what they believe ultimately remains after liberation.

The Fourth Observer’s Final Reflection

If the joys and sorrows of life are largely the consequences of past causes,

and if our present freedom lies mainly in awareness, equanimity, and the way we choose to respond,

then perhaps the first purpose of spirituality is not to solve the mystery of the universe.

Perhaps its first purpose is simply this:

To live whatever comes without passions, without craving, and without ignorance.

The answers to what happens after liberation may differ.

But when asked how a person walking the path of liberation should live, all three traditions come remarkably close.

Perhaps the fourth observer pauses and concludes:

“I do not yet know what the ultimate Truth is. But whatever truth makes me more compassionate, less egoistic, less attached, less reactive, and more deeply aware—that is the truth toward which I have taken one more step. Perhaps the purpose of philosophy is not to win arguments, but to awaken.”

The Collyrium of Knowledge: From Eyesight to Inner Vision

We often believe that we see with our eyes. Science tells us that this is only partly true. The eyes merely receive light; the real act of seeing takes place in the brain.

At the back of the eye lies the retina, a delicate layer containing two kinds of light-sensitive cells: cone cells and rod cells.

Cone cells function in bright light. They are sensitive mainly to red, green, and blue wavelengths. The brain combines these signals to create the rich tapestry of colours that we experience—the redness of a rose, the greenery of a forest, and the blue of the sky. Colour, therefore, is not merely in the object; it is an interpretation created by the brain.

Rod cells are the companions of darkness. They do not perceive colour, but they detect shape, movement, and direction. When daylight fades, they become our guides.

Science explains how we see. Indian spirituality asks a deeper question: Who is it that truly sees?

Here, an ancient Sanskrit verse opens a new dimension:

Ajñāna-timirāndhasya jñānāñjana-śalākayā
Cakṣur unmīlitaṁ yena tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ.

“Salutations to the Guru who opens the eyes of one blinded by the darkness of ignorance by applying the collyrium of knowledge with the instrument called the śalākā.”

In this verse, the collyrium (añjana) is not a medicinal ointment. It is knowledge. The śalākā is not merely a slender applicator used by a physician. It symbolizes the Guru’s wisdom, compassion, experience, and discernment. And the eyes referred to are not merely the physical eyes, but the eyes of consciousness.

No matter how brilliant the sun may be, it is of no use to one whose eyes remain closed. Likewise, truth may stand before us, yet it remains unseen as long as the mind is veiled by ignorance.

The Greek philosopher Plato expressed a similar insight through his famous Allegory of the Cave. Prisoners, chained inside a cave, mistake shadows on the wall for reality. When one prisoner escapes and sees the sunlit world, he realizes that what he had accepted as truth was merely an illusion. Returning to enlighten the others, he is met with disbelief and resistance.

Centuries earlier, the sages of India had conveyed the same eternal message: ignorance can be dispelled only by the collyrium of knowledge.

The Upanishads express this aspiration in a timeless prayer:

Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya.

“Lead me from darkness to light.”

This darkness is not the absence of sunlight. It is the darkness of ignorance, ego, prejudice, fear, greed, superstition, and illusion. The light sought is not physical illumination but the light of truth, wisdom, and self-realization.

For this reason, Indian tradition reveres the Guru not merely as a teacher but as the one who applies the Jñānāñjana-Śalākā—the collyrium of wisdom. A lamp removes external darkness; a Guru removes inner darkness. A lamp enables us to see objects; a Guru enables us to perceive reality. A lamp gives eyesight; a Guru gives insight.

When we see only with our physical eyes, we become absorbed in appearances—colour, caste, wealth, status, and outward distinctions. When we begin to see through knowledge, we perceive the same divine consciousness shining in every living being. From that vision arise compassion, service, humility, and love.

The rod cells of the eye help us find our way through physical darkness. The Guru’s Jñānāñjana-Śalākā guides us through the darkness of life itself.

That is the essence of the spiritual journey: from eyesight to insight, from information to knowledge, from knowledge to wisdom, and from wisdom to Self-realization.

When this journey is complete, the world remains exactly as it was. What changes is the one who sees. And when the seer is transformed, a new dawn begins—not in the sky, but within.

Secular State

 Secular State

There are 193 recognised UN member countries and 2 observer states. In addition, around 6–10 territories or entities are seeking wider international recognition. Thus, broadly speaking, about 200–205 countries and territories are inhabited by more than 8 billion people.

Of these, approximately 2.5 billion are Christians, 2 billion Muslims, 1.2 billion Hindus, 0.5 billion Buddhists, 16 million Jews, while the remaining 1.8 billion follow smaller religions, traditional faiths, indigenous beliefs, or have no formal religion.

Of around 205 countries, approximately 157 have Christian-majority populations, 47 Muslim-majority, 3 Hindu-majority, and 7 Buddhist-majority populations. These figures may overlap or vary depending on the source and definition of “majority.”

Around 96 countries are officially secular, while about 99 countries are not formally secular. Among the latter, around 43 have an official state religion—approximately 27 Muslim, 13 Christian, 2 Buddhist, and 1 Jewish. Some other countries may officially recognise a religion or favour it in practice without formally declaring it the state religion.

There are also countries where governments give significant financial, legal, or political privileges to one particular religion, while minority faiths may receive less favourable treatment. On the other hand, some countries are restrictive or hostile towards organised religion, exercising tight control over religious institutions.

Interestingly, Uzbekistan, the ancestral homeland of Babur, is officially a secular state but maintains strict state control over religious activities. Mosques and clergy are regulated, and independent religious education is restricted, largely in the name of preventing religious extremism and political radicalisation.

India

Coming to India, one may argue that 21st-century India could be moving towards a model that favours religious and cultural heritage, as governments increasingly spend public money on pilgrimage infrastructure, religious tourism, and facilities around important places of worship.

However, when it comes to the legal framework, the Constitution of India is the supreme framework of governance, and criminal laws are generally common to all citizens. At the same time, civil matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and family affairs have historically been governed partly by religion-specific personal laws—for example, the Hindu Marriage Act for Hindus and different personal laws for other communities.

There are hundreds of millions of Hindus across the world. How many Hindu households actually keep the Manu Smriti at home? Very few. How many have actually read it? Again, very few. Yet some ideas and customs associated with it may have been inherited indirectly through parents, family, community, and society.

This raises an important distinction: a religion is not merely its scriptures; it is also the customs, traditions, social practices, and laws that evolve around it over centuries.

The real question for a secular state, therefore, is whether the state provides equal citizenship and equal protection of law to all, while allowing every individual the freedom to follow, practise, or not follow any religion.

Sky The First Temple

Sky: The First Temple

Alexander the Great was not a Christian. He died in 323 BCE, more than three centuries before the birth of Jesus Christ. Like every Macedonian king of his age, he worshipped the Greek gods—Zeus, Athena, Apollo and others. Before battle he prayed to them; after victory he thanked them. But this raises a fascinating question: Were these gods uniquely Greek, or did they belong to a much older human tradition?

To answer that, we must travel back thousands of years, long before Greece, Rome, Persia or Vedic India emerged as civilizations.

Before there were temples or scriptures, there was the sky. Early humans watched the rising Sun, the changing Moon, thunder, lightning, rivers and fire with awe. These forces of nature became their first deities. The sky was the father, the earth the mother, the Sun the giver of life, and fire the messenger between humanity and the heavens.

Remarkably, this ancient instinct still survives. Across the world, when people achieve extraordinary success, survive a tragedy, or witness what they consider a miracle, they instinctively look upward. An athlete points to the sky after winning a medal; a rescued victim folds hands and gazes heavenward. Whether religious or not, humanity continues to associate the heavens with a power greater than itself. Long before we built temples, the sky was our first sanctuary.

Modern linguistics and comparative mythology suggest that many civilizations inherited these beliefs from a prehistoric people known as the Proto-Indo-Europeans, who lived on the Eurasian steppes around 4500–2500 BCE. As they migrated into Europe, Iran and the Indian subcontinent, they carried with them a common language and a shared mythology centred on nature.

One striking example survives in language. The Vedic Dyaus Pitā, the Greek Zeus Patēr, and the Roman Jupiter (Iovis Pater) all derive from the same ancient expression meaning “Sky Father.” Likewise, the Vedic Mitra corresponds to the Persian Mithra, while Ushas, the goddess of dawn, reappears as the Greek Eos and the Roman Aurora.

The Rigveda, among the world’s oldest sacred texts, celebrates Surya (the Sun), Agni (Fire), Indra (Thunder) and Varuna (Cosmic Order). Ancient Iran preserved many of the same ideas before the teachings of Zarathustra centred religion upon Ahura Mazda, while retaining concepts such as Mithra and Asha, the principle of truth and cosmic order, closely related to the Vedic Rta.

Watching the heavens also gave birth to science. Babylonian astronomers mapped the stars, Egyptians refined the solar calendar, Indian scholars developed Jyotisha, and Greek thinkers transformed centuries of observation into systematic astronomy and mathematics. The division of a circle into 360 degrees, the 60-minute hour, and many foundations of geometry emerged from this long intellectual journey.

When Alexander marched through Persia into northwestern India, he unknowingly entered lands that preserved distant echoes of the same ancient heritage. Though their languages and rituals had evolved, they continued to honour the heavens, the Sun, fire and the belief that the universe is governed by an unseen cosmic order.

History often presents India, Persia, Greece and Rome as separate civilizations. Yet their myths, languages and scientific traditions reveal a deeper connection. They measured the same Sun, observed the same stars and searched for the same truths.

Different names. Different civilizations.

But above them all stretched the same sky.

E = mc²

From Primordial Energy to Consciousness: The Evolution of the Universe

Abstract

Modern cosmology describes a universe that has evolved continuously for approximately 13.8 billion years from an extraordinarily hot and dense primordial state. During this evolution, energy transformed into matter, matter assembled into stars and galaxies, stars produced the chemical elements necessary for life, and biological evolution eventually gave rise to consciousness. At the same time, photons emitted billions of years ago continue to travel through an expanding universe, carrying information from its distant past. This article examines the scientific understanding of cosmic evolution while exploring the philosophical implications of humanity’s emergence as a consequence of the universe’s own evolution.

The Universe as a Continuous Evolution

The night sky is not merely a collection of distant objects; it is a record of cosmic history. Every telescope that observes distant galaxies is effectively looking back in time. The James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope detect light that began its journey billions of years ago, allowing us to observe galaxies as they existed shortly after the birth of the universe.

This remarkable possibility exists because light travels at a finite speed—approximately 300,000 kilometres per second. A galaxy located 13 billion light-years away is therefore observed not as it exists today but as it existed 13 billion years ago.

However, the universe is not static. While the photons travel towards Earth, the fabric of space itself expands. This expansion stretches the wavelength of light, decreases its frequency, and reduces its energy. This phenomenon, known as cosmological redshift, explains why light originally emitted in ultraviolet or visible wavelengths is often observed today in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The electromagnetic spectrum forms a continuous range extending from high-energy gamma rays to extremely low-energy radio waves. These are not different kinds of light but different manifestations of the same electromagnetic radiation. A photon retains its identity throughout its journey while its wavelength gradually increases as space expands.

The Primordial Universe

Scientific observations indicate that the universe began in an extraordinarily hot and dense state approximately 13.8 billion years ago. Contrary to popular imagination, the Big Bang was not an explosion occurring within empty space. Rather, it marked the rapid expansion of space itself.

Modern physics successfully describes the universe from about 10⁻⁴³ second after the Big Bang—the Planck time. Earlier than this, our present theories cease to be reliable because gravity and quantum mechanics have not yet been unified into a complete theory.

Whether the primordial universe was an infinitesimal singularity, a finite quantum state, or something entirely different remains unknown.

Therefore, science confidently explains the evolution of the universe after its earliest moments but does not yet explain the ultimate origin of that primordial state.

From Energy to Matter

Einstein’s famous equation,

E = mc²

revealed one of the deepest principles of nature: matter and energy are interchangeable.

During the earliest stages of the universe, temperatures were so high that energy continuously transformed into elementary particles, while particles annihilated back into energy. As the universe expanded and cooled, stable particles remained. These particles combined to form atoms of hydrogen and helium.

Gravity gathered these atoms into enormous clouds that eventually collapsed to form stars.

Within stars, nuclear fusion created heavier elements such as carbon, oxygen, silicon, calcium and iron. Massive stars ended their lives in supernova explosions, dispersing these elements throughout space.

The atoms composing Earth, oceans, plants, animals and the human body were therefore manufactured inside ancient stars.

We are, in the most literal scientific sense, made of stardust.

The Evolution of Complexity

Cosmic evolution did not end with the formation of stars.

On suitable planets, chemistry gradually became biology.

Simple molecules formed increasingly complex compounds. Eventually, self-replicating systems appeared, initiating biological evolution.

Over billions of years, evolution produced multicellular organisms, nervous systems, brains and ultimately consciousness.

Human intelligence therefore represents an unbroken chain extending from the physical laws established in the earliest universe.

The same laws governing elementary particles ultimately permitted mathematics, music, philosophy, ethics and scientific inquiry.

Energy Expressing Itself in Different Forms

A useful analogy may be drawn from everyday technology.

Electrical energy can illuminate a halogen lamp, rotate an electric motor, power a hospital, or charge the battery of a smartphone. Although the manifestations differ dramatically, the underlying energy remains the same.

Similarly, the primordial energy of the universe has continuously transformed into increasingly organized forms.

What began as an intensely energetic primordial state eventually became particles, atoms, galaxies, planets, living organisms and conscious beings.

This should not be interpreted as implying that everything is made of photons. Modern physics distinguishes photons from matter particles such as electrons and quarks. Nevertheless, both matter and radiation emerged from the same primordial energetic conditions that existed in the early universe.

Consciousness as a Product of Cosmic Evolution

Perhaps the most remarkable consequence of cosmic evolution is consciousness.

The universe has produced organisms capable of asking questions about its own origin.

The atoms within the human brain were once forged inside stars. The energy sustaining every heartbeat originated in nuclear reactions within the Sun. The physical laws governing the brain are the same laws that govern distant galaxies.

Human consciousness is therefore not separate from the universe but a consequence of its long evolutionary history.

Carl Sagan expressed this beautifully:

“We are a way for the cosmos to know itself.”

Although poetic, the statement captures a profound scientific insight. Through conscious beings, the universe has acquired the ability to investigate its own past.

Science and Philosophy

Science and philosophy ask different questions.

Science seeks explanations that can be tested through observation and experiment.

Philosophy asks questions concerning meaning, existence and ultimate origin.

Science presently describes how the universe evolved from an early hot, dense state.

Philosophy asks why such a state existed at all.

Whether the primordial universe emerged from a deeper quantum reality, whether the cosmos undergoes endless cycles of creation and dissolution, or whether time itself began with the Big Bang remains unknown.

These questions continue to inspire both physicists and philosophers.

Conclusion

The history of the universe is the history of transformation.

Energy became matter.

Matter became stars.

Stars created the elements.

The elements formed planets.

Chemistry evolved into biology.

Biology evolved into consciousness.

Today, conscious observers study the photons that have travelled for more than thirteen billion years across an expanding universe, attempting to reconstruct the story of their own cosmic origin.

The universe is therefore not merely a collection of celestial objects but an ongoing process of evolution.

Whether the present universe is in its youth, maturity or approaching an eventual old age remains uncertain. Yet one conclusion is firmly supported by science: everything we know—from galaxies to human thought—has emerged through an uninterrupted cosmic evolution spanning 13.8 billion years.

The search for what preceded that evolution remains one of humanity’s greatest scientific and philosophical frontiers.

This essay deliberately stays within the boundaries of established cosmology while allowing philosophical reflection. It avoids presenting speculation as fact but leaves space for deeper questions—an approach that is both scientifically rigorous and philosophically engaging.
