King's Elephant

King's Elephant

There was a King. He had organized wisdom competition of his kingdom. A group of villagers from poor community won the competition. The King rewarded them with an Elephant as a prize for winning the competition. But he put a condition to keep the Elephant with themselves permanently. The team returned with joy to the village carrying the King's Elephant. First few days they managed the food for the Elephant with enthusiasm. But as the grass stock of all the household was getting emptied, they all worried about the food for the Elephant. It was King's Elephant. They were afraid of the punishment by the King. At last, they went to the Old Man in the village for advice.

The Old Man after listening the story advised them to sell off the Elephant. The villagers told him about the pre condition imposed by the King to not to keep the Elephant themselves. They were afraid of the punishment. But the Old Man again advised that selling the Elephant is the only option to get free from the cost of maintenance. If the King calls you, I shall come and reply, he gave the assurance to them.

The villagers sold the Elephant and shared the money received, equally. After sometimes, the King inquired about the condition of the Elephant, he gifted to the villagers. The soldiers of the King came to the village and inquired but didn't find the Elephant. They ordered them to come to the King's court immediately and explain. And also warned for punishment. The villagers went to the old man and told him about the King's order. The old man said, don't worry. He asked them to bring a small cage and a Rat. He put the Rat in the cage and went along with the villagers to the King's court.

Where is my Elephant? the King shouted. Shivers passed through the body of the villagers hearing the shout of the King.

Then, the Old Man come forward and put the cage with the Rat before the King. This is the Elephant, Maharaj.

The King looked at the cage and became angry. Are you making me fool? Is this small animal in the cage is my big Elephant? Are you mad?

No Magaraj, this is the Elephant, you have gifted to the villagers, he replied coolly.

The King was losing his temper badly, still following a principle of Natural justice allowed him to explain.

Maharaj, you have gifted the Elephant to us. It became famous and adorable because it was King's Elephant. Many people from surroundings areas came to see it everyday. And each one of them with lot of love; adore, stroke and rub him with hands. जो भी आता, हाथ फेर लेता। As a result the Elephant became smaller and smaller. And now it is left to this size, Maharaj.

Finally, he explained how that prize became liability for the villagers. The King accepted his mistake and rewarded some land to the villagers and appointed that wise man as an Advisor! (Don't know, why? For making the Elephant, a Rat?)

Much before Rajiv Gandhi, my uncle Khushal Bha told us this story, how the Elephant size benefits given by the Government reduced to the size of a Rat as major share has been taken away by the middle agencies and functionaries in Government. Jo bhi aata, haath fer leta. जो भी आता, हाथ फेर लेता।

Public money at the disposal of Officials is like honey kept in the mouth of Bear.

Fast in hydrabad

Posture during fast is important, otherwise Chandrababu may not lie down on a very first day of his fast against creation of Telangana.

Political decision in AP was a problem during its first creation in 1953. The agitation started with 'Madras Manade' later lead by late Amarjeevi Potti Sriramulu with a lengthy fast, succeeded only after his death on 16 December 1952. The popular agitation started with his death procession disrupting normal life successfully ended with an announcement by the PM Pandit Nehru about formation of a separate state for Telugu on 19/12/52.

Hyderabad is always an issue in Indian politics. Whether it is an issue of Nizam of Hyderabad or IT hub of India or a Supari Centre; people want Hyderabad (the centre for employment and better quality of life) not Simandhra.

Let us see, how GOI deals with the issue.

People's will prevail in democracy. Leaders will carry them towards power.

World of Authority and Civil Servants

World of Authority and Civil Servants

Mother Earth could have been a peaceful home if the creatures are not fond of authority. Humans, animals, birds, insects, everywhere, there is a search of followers who obey one's command.

In humans; the husband commands over the wife, and wife over children. Slowly she takes the reins of commands over husband as well as the new family members, i.e. daughters-in-law. The person, when in office or at working place, try to put someone under his order, even if he/she is a worker or labourer. The higher up increase their command area over more and more number of people.

When the humans form a social group of living habitats, or working habitats, they act to pull and push the commands. The social groups and caste system have been developed from power and protection instinct. A person timid in the house can command over backwards, in the name of caste superiority. The religious groups formed for salvation are also not free from the hierarchy and authority.

Therefore, one see fights everywhere. The persons in search of authority are working for increasing their nets of people under commands. And in that search, the ghetto is created, where like minded people come together, act together and share together. However, the chief remains chief, till people see power around him. He/she has to prove with acts and appearance, that power is with him/her indeed. Otherwise, new chief emerges.

I read a news about some changes in UPSC CS Preliminary examination, recently. It was argued that Science stream students takes away more seats because they have advantage in one of the two papers, i.e., reasoning and mathematics. Now, candidates have to score only 33% qualifying marks in that paper and the merit of the passing will be decided by the score in the General Study paper of 200 marks.

You may be little confused, what is the relation between authority and preliminary exam?

Science students score more but Arts students are better administrator, the argument placed for that move.

I think, there is strength in the argument. All are performing, but I have noticed in the service that, the Science stream officers focus more on their work output and least bothered about the surrounding pressure groups. With superiority complex in back of mind, many times they under value human relations and focus more on performance and quantified targets. Not bothered about publicity, they generally land up in the dispute areas easily. But the Arts stream officers focus more on surroundings and deliver output with diplomacy. And the political bosses, mostly coming from Arts stream pull on well with them, as their wave length matches more than others.

Therefore, if somebody do a research paper, I am sure, the stability of tenure on better postings will be more with the Arts stream officers compared to the Science stream officers. The merit marks in UPSC has nothing to do with the day to day marks of diplomacy in public administration.

Life everywhere is a game of authority, where everyone is in search of authority and territories.

Group of Arts rules. Administration is an Art. Are you provoked, please argue!!!

Gold in Tons in Ananthpadmanabh Swami Temple in Trivendram

Gold in Tons in Ananthpadmanabh Swami Temple in Trivendram

Ananthpadmanabh Swami Temple at Tiruvanantpuram is not a place to miss by the tourists, because it is one of the beautiful temples of Kerala and it has Gold storage in tons.

A lawyer, devotee to the God Ananathpadmanabha, doing pooja and darshana in the temple for 30 years, objected the right of ownership of the successor King over the Gold and ornaments found in tons from the temple on the ground that princely states rights over public property have gone after 1972. Now, the entire property falls under the custody of the Supreme Court. Every one is under the scanner of CCTV camera and police in the campus. But it is a great surprise of the treasure worth of billions, were kept in 4 simple rooms adjutant to the main temple and besides the Vyas temple for years.

A temple with beautiful Gomukh depicting stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata with beautiful carvings was constructed with stones on 1212 stone pillars in just 6 months by the order of the Martand King Dharma Maharaja in 1790. It was impossible task but the architect, sculpture and builder Viru Mutthu Asari, did it in 6 months with the help of 600 elephants and 3000 people. His statue with his family members (wife, son, daughter and brother) has been carved on one of the pillars.

One has to start darshana with God Narsinh, Lord Krishna, some deities and then to God Ananthapadmanabh Swami. The temple was established some 7000 years ago and it has idol made of wood. It went into fire some 200 years ago. And the present idol was made from 12000 Shaligram from river Gandaki of Bihar. It is very long and black in colour. One has to do darshana of the God in three part of from 3 windows in the lights of lamps. The face of the God and hand with Lord Shiva from first window, the naval and padma Brahma from the second window and the legs from the third window. One can't demand from the God Ananthpadmanabh Swami as he is sleeping and he knows, what to give to you. The idol of Hanuman is in smiling posture is very attractive and unique. As it is a Vaishnava Lord Vishnu temple, Ganapati darshana is at the last of the tour to the campus.

The Verma dynasty of Brahmachari Kings were devotees of the God therefore they were called Ananthapadmanabh Swami Dasa. They had international trades, therefore probably they have exchanged pearls with Gold from China, and developed the huge storage of Gold OR it is a wealth from the savings of the Kingdom converted into Gold. Either the God or the SC knows the truth. The case is in the SC, it will tell us something more on the treasure as the God Ananthapadmanabh Swami is into a deep sound sleep.

It was raining heavily but we have enjoyed darshana, wearing a dhoti and enjoying first rain showers of the Season.

Mamu gifts the Kingdom, Padmanabham Palace of Teavankor Kingdom of Kerala

Mamu gifts the Kingdom, Padmanabham Palace of Travankor Kingdom of Kerala

It is a wooden palace of 14 buildings, made from Sagwan tree, spread over 7.5 acre where 14 Kings of the Verma Dynasty ruled over 240 years (1550-1790).

Everybody has heard the phrase "mamu banaya", but here in Travankor Kingdom, the Bhanja gets the Kingdom from Mamu after his retirement. The only condition of Brahmcharya, the Bhanja has to follow. It is a Brahmchari Kingdom, where son of the sister is the successor King. The King lives in a 4 storied building: Ground flour is used for storing the treasury; first as a bed rooms of the Brahmchari King and his mother; third floor as meditation hall and fourth floor as Temple. There was toilet and bath facilities attached to their rooms.

The dining hall in the palace has capacity to serve 2000 people together. 21x72 feet, 1+1 structure had been used as dining for the people during religious occasions. Ground structure was placed on stone columns and the first floor on wood column.

The meeting room of the King was small and simple. Chair of the King in the Centre, 4+4 chairs of the ministers both sides and sitting for the executives in the front. To improve the aroma of the room small windows of the store corridor used to be opened where the sandal woods were stored. There were 9 boxes carved on the roof of the meeting room, 9 laxmis. All important decisions were taken under their witnesses.

The palace buildings have small doors with average heights of roofs but the guest house for the foreigners is spacious and with good height doors. The kingdom had trade relation with China and later with Dutch people of Netherlands.

A campus with reasonable size cottage palace has been earmarked for the retired King (Mamu). It has facilities of old age requirements of massage and herbal bath. The sister of the King lives with Mamu. There is a delivery room to give birth to the child, who can be groomed as a future king under the guidance of the Grand Mamu. A graceful post retirement life for the retired King.

The capital was shifted from this place to Trivendram by the Martand Dharma Maharaja in 1790. Now the palace comes in Tamilnadu, but the campus is governed by the Department of Archaeology, State of Kerala.

A quality of life the King and his family used to enjoy those days, even better life is enjoyed by present generation in terms of facilities and comforts.

Kanyakumari the Sangam of 3 Seas

Kanyakumari the Sangam of 3 Seas.

Kanyakumari in Tamilnadu (India), a sangam place of Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean, is one of the most spectacular tourist sites of the world.

Apart from the Sangam of 3 Seas; Devi Kanyakumari (virgin girl Devi Parvati) Temple (main temple built by Parasuram); Vivekanand Rock memorial, constructed in the memory of Swami Vivekananda's 3days meditation on the rock on 25-27 December 1891; Devi Kanyakumari's legmark on the rock in the memorial, Giant Statue of famous Tamil Poet Thiruvallur; and Gandhi mandapam, constructed in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi's visit in 1937 to the place; and the tourists are adding beauty to the place.

One can see Sun rise everyday through out the year, but Sun set can be seen only for 6 months, due to Uttarayan and Dakshinarayan move of the Sun.

Weather was adverse because of very heavy rainfall, winds and rough Sea during our visit. But timely help from the local administration made our visit to VRM, SoT, the temple, the Sangam place easy. As the Boats time closed at 4 PM, luckily we boarded the second last boat of the day. We enjoyed the visit with a few minutes meditation at the memorial site. It was a fit atmosphere to enjoy hot peanuts with spicy kaccha mango at Sangam Mandapam. Kannan, a watchman of the Government Circuit House, smarter than the PRO was able to arrange smooth passage of the guests at all places.

Due to cloudy atmosphere we couldn't see the Sunrise. I had an opportunity to see the Moon rise and Sun set in January 1986 during our Bharat Darshan tour, but Lakshmi missed the opportunity this time because of clouds. I have promised her to come again on a full moon day in Dec-Jan (year not confirmed!) so that she can enjoy the rise and set of both, the Sun and the Moon.

If traveling with family, don't miss visiting Kanyakumari, the samgam of 3 Seas.

Dhanushkodi, the place of Hanuman Jump

Dhanushkodi, the place of Hanuman Jump.

Dhanushkodi, the last land of Indian at the sacred confluence of the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean, and where my legs were unable to leap for a metre; a divine monkey Lord Hanuman took a jump of 18 nautical mile in search of Devi Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, some 10,000 years ago. Engineers Nala and Nila constructed a bridge Ram Setu for the transport of the army of Lord Rama.

It is very difficult to believe a man's giant efforts of searching and rescuing his wife with the help of the army of monkeys and beers. Rakyabhisek of Vibhishan, the younger brother of Ravana by Lord Rama, near Dhanushkodi, was an act of diplomacy to defeat the strongest enemy. Insult of Vivhishan by Ravana and him joining the side of Lord Rama, was one of the major causes of the defeat of Ravana, because Vibhishan unveiled the secrets of the strength of Ravan's army. It is a great lesson of diplomacy, many follow in present days politics.

The place was connected by rail and road till 1964. But they were destroyed in the cyclone of 1964. Neither rail restored nor roads in last 51 years. Some road work is in progress.

One can reach to the last destination on land by traveling 12 kms on sand through freewheel keep of Mahindra. We did it by paying Rs. 1300 for the trip of 3 hrs. There are forewheel mini buses, that can charge Rs. 50/head but move as per their will taking maximum passengers in the bus.

If not keen to travel on sand, one can have darshana of Ram Temple and return after traveling 16 kms from Rameshwaram.
