An Empty Camp

Srinagar – 5 May 2025

This morning we visited Kheer Bhawani Temple and Manasbal Lake.

Kheer Bhawani, also worshipped as Kshir Bhawani, Rajnya, and Shyama, is the presiding deity and family goddess (Kuldevi) of the Kashmiri Pandit community. Every year, on the eighth day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha, thousands of devotees gather here for the annual fair to seek the blessings of the Divine Mother.

The shrine is built around a sacred spring surrounded by magnificent chinar trees. In the centre of the spring stands a small temple housing a Shiva Linga and an image of Goddess Parvati. Yet the principal object of worship is the sacred spring itself, regarded as the living manifestation of Mother Bhawani.

The colour of the spring’s water is believed to change, traditionally regarded as an omen of forthcoming natural or human calamities. Green and white are considered auspicious, while red and black are regarded as inauspicious. The priest told us that the water had turned red during the Kargil War and remained black throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Goddess is traditionally offered kheer (sweet rice pudding), which is why the shrine is known as Kheer Bhawani. Devotees were offering flowers, milk, and kheer into the sacred spring. During our visit, halwa had been offered as prasad, and we too were fortunate to receive it.

The shrine is also associated with the Nagas (serpents), who are believed to guard the sacred spring. Some devotees even claim to have seen snakes here. Given the ancient chinar trees with their hollow trunks, the abundance of water, and the cool surroundings, such a habitat would indeed be suitable for them.

According to local tradition, the Goddess was originally the family deity of Ravana, the king of Lanka. When Ravana strayed from the path of righteousness, Lord Hanuman, with the Goddess’s consent, brought Her from Lanka to Kashmir, where She has since been worshipped.

The temple complex is spacious, with small shrines dedicated to Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva. The premises are guarded by the CRPF, and every visitor enters only after recording their details in the security register.

After paying our respects at Kheer Bhawani, we proceeded to nearby Manasbal Lake.

Surrounded by gentle hills, the lake possesses a quiet beauty of its own. The willow trees lining its shores add to its charm. The lake is deep, and shikara rides are available for visitors.

But today there were hardly any tourists.

The shikara owners sat idly by, disappointed and waiting for passengers who never came. At a time of year when they would normally have no time even to talk, the tourist season had collapsed. A giant Ferris wheel stood ready, but there was no one to ride it.

We felt like having something to eat, but the Kashmiri wazwan cuisine was not suitable for us. After spending some time walking around the lake, we returned to Srinagar.

In our opinion, neither Manasbal nor any other lake can truly match the beauty of Dal Lake and Srinagar.

By then we were hungry. Shakeel took us to a reputed restaurant, but it served almost exclusively non-vegetarian food. We therefore walked into a nearby vegetarian restaurant and ordered the famous Kashmiri Dum Aloo. The gravy was delicious, but the potatoes themselves lacked flavour.

No visit to Srinagar is complete without seeing Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal.

Though Chashme Shahi is small, it possesses remarkable elegance and refinement. Pari Mahal too is modest in size, but its commanding view over Dal Lake makes it exceptionally beautiful.

Likewise, a visit to Srinagar remains incomplete without a ride on a shikara.

Nearly a thousand shikaras line the shores of Dal Lake, but with tourists absent, they remained moored along the banks. Their owners chatted among themselves, sang songs to pass the time, and tried to keep their spirits alive. Yet a day without customers is a day without income. Even the owners cannot pay their boatmen unless business returns.

At one jetty, a boatman quoted ₹2,800 for a four-point tour. After bargaining, he agreed to ₹1,500. I was ready to accept, but Lakshmi wisely suggested that we continue looking. At the next stand, another boatman offered the same tour for ₹800, and we gladly accepted.

Only two days earlier, a shikara had capsized in strong winds, claiming one life. The incident remained in the back of our minds, but the calm waters of Dal Lake were too inviting to resist.

The ride proved wonderfully relaxing.

As our boat glided gently across the lake, one floating vendor after another approached us in their own shikaras. Each greeted us warmly and displayed something unique for sale.

One offered to take photographs. Another served steaming cups of kahwa. Someone sold popcorn, another fresh fruit platters. Others displayed handicrafts, carved ornaments, saffron, or shilajit.

It was as though an entire floating marketplace was travelling alongside us, each vendor stopping for a friendly conversation before moving on.

Shops stand on the water itself, and many families actually live in houses built over the lake. When women need household supplies, they simply board a shikara, row to the market, purchase what they need, and return home by boat.

Isn’t that extraordinary?

Our boatman was Jubbar, a kind-hearted Muslim.

He believed firmly that both life and death are gifts from Allah, and therefore did not allow accidents beyond his control to burden his mind. Yet he too was deeply troubled by the collapse of tourism after the Pahalgam tragedy.

“Who did this? Why did they do it?” he kept asking.

“Would a Kashmiri ever kick his own stomach? Why do some people and sections of the media keep defaming Kashmiris? Our own children live and study in other cities. Why would we want anyone to be harmed? We are not the people many imagine us to be. We honour our guests and respect their religions. They bring us employment. What we want is peace, livelihood, and love.”

As if to divert his own sorrow, Jubbar began pointing out the many Bollywood films that had been shot on Dal Lake.

Indeed, who can ever forget Shammi Kapoor’s unforgettable songs filmed here?

Seen from a shikara, Dal Lake and Srinagar possess an almost magical beauty.

At one point we noticed a large machine cutting aquatic weeds. Smiling, Jubbar remarked, “That is a money-making machine. It trims only the upper layer of grass. Wherever it cuts one blade, ten more grow. This machine will never run out of work. It keeps running, and money keeps coming.”

Without our realising it, an hour and fifteen minutes had passed.

After visiting Lavender Point, Nehru Garden, Meena Bazaar, and a few other attractions, we returned feeling peaceful and quietly content. The fatigue of the entire day had disappeared.

By six in the evening we stood before the famous clock tower at Lal Chowk as it struck the hour. We spent some time strolling through the market, bought a few gifts for the children, and finally took a cycle rickshaw for ₹50 back to the Circuit House, reaching there around 8:00 p.m.

The people of Kashmir are large-hearted. Almost every sentence they speak begins or ends with the name of Allah. They remember Him constantly and seek His blessings in every aspect of life. Every event is viewed as His will or His gift.

For those who truly live by their faith, it is difficult to imagine choosing the path of evil.

The Kashmir of 1990 was very different from the Kashmir of today.

In recent years, the Central Government’s security forces have brought the overall situation under effective control, allowing ordinary people to focus once again on building peaceful lives. The steady growth of tourism over the past several years has brought about a significant change in the outlook of Kashmiris. They now see tourists as honoured guests whose spending enriches local lives and creates prosperity.

The Central Government has built excellent highways, introduced the Vande Bharat train, and reduced travel time by constructing long tunnels through the mountains.

Yet the Pahalgam tragedy has dealt a severe blow to this year’s tourist season.

Shakeel expressed the pain of many Kashmiris in just two lines:

Kashmir weeps, and humanity weeps with it.
Perhaps our own Hindustan has turned away from us.
