The BJD secured about 1.01 crore votes, while the BJP polled roughly 1 crore votes, a difference of 38K votes, yet the BJP formed the government. The Congress, with nearly 33.31 lakh votes, became a decisive factor in the victory and defeat of many candidates. With a 3.58% swing in its favour, the BJP won 55 additional seats, while a 4.49% swing against the BJD led to a loss of 61 seats from its previous tally.

Still, the loss of power after 24 years of continuous rule was largely unexpected. Naveen Patnaik had long been regarded as a hero by the Odia people, but concerns about his declining health and the perception that the command and control of government policies and programmes were shifting into the hands of V. K. Pandian probably influenced the outcome of the last Assembly elections.

A folk narrative is also believed by some observers to have played a subtle psychological role in the change of power. A swing among BJD voters was said to be influenced by this tale, prompting them to support the BJP to prevent Pandian’s rise, drawing parallels with a medieval legend in which a Tamil king denied the hand of Princess Padmavati to an Odia king.

In Odia folk tradition, a well-known ballad is associated with King Purushottama Deva of Odisha, narrating his quest to marry Princess Padmavati of Kanchi. The poem blends history and legend and speaks of two battles: the first, where Purushottama Deva is defeated and humiliated after the Kanchi king mocks him as merely a servant of Lord Jagannath; and the second, where he returns with renewed resolve and divine blessings, ultimately conquering Kanchi. The victory culminates in his marriage to Padmavati, symbolising restored honour, devotion, and perseverance. The verses celebrate courage, faith in Lord Jagannath, and the belief that humility before the divine can transform defeat into triumph.

Popularity alone does not win elections, just as holding good cards alone does not win tricks in bridge. It is the strategy and timing of play that ultimately turn results in one’s favour. The BJP managed this in Odisha despite polling slightly fewer votes than the BJD, and in the broader picture, Odisha’s outcome 20 of 21 seats contributed to the party forming the national government for a third consecutive term. The BJP received 13 lakh more votes in the parliamentary election than in the Assembly election.

कुछ पर्यवेक्षकों का यह भी मानना है कि सत्ता परिवर्तन में एक लोककथा ने सूक्ष्म मनोवैज्ञानिक भूमिका निभाई। कहा गया कि बीजेडी के कुछ मतदाताओं का रुझान इस कथा से प्रभावित हुआ और उन्होंने पांडियन के उभार को रोकने के लिए भाजपा का समर्थन किया, जिसकी तुलना एक मध्यकालीन किंवदंती से की गई जिसमें एक तमिल राजा ने ओडिया राजा को राजकुमारी पद्मावती का हाथ देने से इंकार कर दिया था।

ओडिया लोकपरंपरा में एक प्रसिद्ध गीत राजा पुरुषोत्तम देव से जुड़ा है, जो कांची की राजकुमारी पद्मावती से विवाह की उनकी अभिलाषा का वर्णन करता है। यह काव्य इतिहास और किंवदंती का मिश्रण है और दो युद्धों का उल्लेख करता है—पहले युद्ध में पुरुषोत्तम देव पराजित और अपमानित होते हैं जब कांची का राजा उन्हें भगवान जगन्नाथ का मात्र सेवक कहकर उपहास करता है; दूसरे युद्ध में वे नए संकल्प और दैवी आशीर्वाद के साथ लौटते हैं और अंततः कांची पर विजय प्राप्त करते हैं। यह विजय पद्मावती से उनके विवाह पर समाप्त होती है, जो सम्मान की पुनर्स्थापना, भक्ति और दृढ़ता का प्रतीक है। इन पद्यों में साहस, भगवान जगन्नाथ में आस्था और यह विश्वास झलकता है कि दैवी विनम्रता पराजय को विजय में बदल सकती है।

केवल लोकप्रियता चुनाव नहीं जिताती, जैसे केवल अच्छे पत्ते होने से ब्रिज का खेल नहीं जीता जाता। रणनीति और सही समय पर चाल चलना ही अंततः परिणाम को अपने पक्ष में मोड़ता है। भाजपा ने ओडिशा में यह कर दिखाया, भले ही उसे बीजेडी से थोड़ा कम वोट मिले। व्यापक परिप्रेक्ष्य में, ओडिशा के 21 में से 20 सीटों के परिणाम ने पार्टी को लगातार तीसरी बार राष्ट्रीय सरकार बनाने में योगदान दिया। भाजपा को विधानसभा चुनाव की तुलना में लोकसभा चुनाव में 13 लाख अधिक वोट मिले।
