Vision Upgrade 

I was deeply in love with my original biological lens and had decided to keep the relationship “till death do us part.” But aging had other plans. My minus power in the right eye jumped from –4.5 to –7.5 to –9.0 within a year, creating a 4.5 difference between the two eyes. Result: I changed spectacles three times in a year — the optician began greeting me like a quarterly subscriber. Ophthalmologists kept advising cataract surgery, but I remained emotionally attached to my “vintage lens.”

I finally got my eyes measured through machines that looked more intelligent than me and decided on surgery. But then a 10-day Odisha tour appeared — so the cataract politely waited. On returning, reality struck on 2nd February 2026, when I confidently marched past the washroom signboard, crossed 4–5 gates, and then had to come back after inquiry. That was the moment I realised my vision needed an urgent software update.

I took an appointment with the government eye hospital surgeon, carefully matching the surgery date with his OT day, the moon sign, and my birth moon sign — medical science plus astrology, double insurance! Cataract surgery felt like entering an unknown sector, so I stayed curious yet cautious. Among the options — monofocal, multifocal, and EDOF — I chose monofocal for its simplicity and high success rate. Among lens brands Alcon, Johnson and Vion, I picked Alcon, trusting its long market reputation. (When it comes to eyes, brand loyalty suddenly becomes very strong.)

Frankly, what drew me to the government hospital was Dr. Vipul Prajapati. In a setup where people usually look outside for “big names,” he himself is the big name inside. Known for his calm confidence, precision, and patient-friendly approach, his reputation travels faster than hospital files. One meets him and instantly feels — the eye is in safe hands. Outstanding skill with remarkable humility is a rare combination, and he carries both effortlessly.

On 7th February 2026 at 11:30 a.m., I reached the hospital. The surgeon was in the OT, so his resident dilated my right eye with drops every 15 minutes. Another resident checked my BP — a respectable 130/80 — and my blood reports were normal. Meanwhile, my wife visited the dental hospital to measure a tooth cap and returned before my eye got its new cap!

I was then taken to the room adjacent to the OT where anesthetic drops were applied — local anesthesia without any heroic injections.

At 12:49 p.m., I was taken into the OT. Dr Vipul Prajapati, the eye surgeon briefly explained the procedure; my only job was to look at a bright light. After 45 minutes of waiting and meditating during dilation, I was calm. They covered me in white cloth, leaving only the right eye exposed like a VIP window. 

Drops were applied and a small ring was placed so the eye wouldn’t blink. The doctor gently began, washed the eye, instructed me to focus on the light, and a tiny 1.9 mm cut was made.

I noticed a tiny red line and then a brief sunset-like visual. Liquid flowed — I could almost feel it near the ears. He used phaco to break and remove the natural cloudy lens and its residuals, cleaned the area, and asked the nurse to open the lens packet. Before I could properly count 1-2-3-4-5, the new foldable lens was inserted. Surgery complete!

I walked out at 1:14 p.m. — no pain, no blood, no trauma. Just 25 minutes inside, and decades of clarity returned. The world suddenly looked freshly polished. Whites became truly white, depth returned, and memories of spotting my bus first at the AMTS stand during college days came alive.

In short, cataract surgery felt less like an operation and more like upgrading from an old black-and-white TV to Ultra HD — except this time, the screen was my own eye.

दृष्टि उन्नयन

मैं अपनी प्राकृतिक आँख के लेंस से गहरा प्रेम करता था और निश्चय कर लिया था कि “जब तक साथ निभेगा, निभाएँगे।” लेकिन उम्र बढ़ने के अपने ही इरादे होते हैं। एक ही वर्ष में मेरी दायीं आँख का माइनस नंबर –4.5 से –7.5 और फिर –9.0 हो गया, जिससे दोनों आँखों में 4.5 का अंतर बन गया। नतीजा — साल में तीन बार चश्मा बदलना पड़ा और ऑप्टिशियन मुझे तिमाही ग्राहक की तरह पहचानने लगा। नेत्र विशेषज्ञ लगातार मोतियाबिंद ऑपरेशन की सलाह दे रहे थे, पर मैं अपने “विंटेज लेंस” से भावनात्मक रूप से जुड़ा हुआ था।

आखिरकार मैंने मशीनों से आँखों की जाँच करवाई — जो मुझसे भी ज़्यादा समझदार लग रही थीं — और सर्जरी का मन बना लिया। तभी 10 दिन का ओडिशा दौरा आ गया, तो मोतियाबिंद ने भी शिष्टाचार दिखाते हुए इंतज़ार कर लिया। वापसी पर 2 फ़रवरी 2026 को हकीकत सामने आई, जब मैं पूरे आत्मविश्वास से वॉशरूम का साइनबोर्ड पार कर गया, 4–5 गेट आगे निकल गया और फिर पूछताछ करके लौटना पड़ा। उसी क्षण समझ आया कि मेरी “विज़न सॉफ्टवेयर” को तुरंत अपडेट चाहिए।

मैंने सरकारी नेत्र अस्पताल के सर्जन से अपॉइंटमेंट लिया — उनकी ओटी की तारीख, दिन का चंद्र राशिफल और अपनी जन्म राशि सब मिलाकर — यानी मेडिकल साइंस के साथ ज्योतिष का डबल इंश्योरेंस! मोतियाबिंद सर्जरी अनजाना क्षेत्र लग रहा था, इसलिए जिज्ञासा भी थी और सावधानी भी। विकल्पों — मोनोफोकल, मल्टीफोकल और EDOF — में से मैंने मोनोफोकल चुना, उसकी सादगी और उच्च सफलता दर को देखते हुए। लेंस ब्रांड्स Alcon, Johnson और Vion में से Alcon चुना, उसकी लंबे समय की प्रतिष्ठा पर भरोसा करते हुए। (आँखों के मामले में ब्रांड लॉयल्टी अचानक बहुत मजबूत हो जाती है।)

सच कहूँ तो मुझे सरकारी अस्पताल तक खींच कर लाने वाला नाम था डॉ. विपुल प्रजापति। जहाँ लोग आम तौर पर “बड़े नाम” बाहर ढूँढते हैं, वहाँ वे स्वयं अंदर ही बड़ा नाम हैं। शांत आत्मविश्वास, सटीकता और मरीज-मित्रवत व्यवहार के लिए प्रसिद्ध, उनकी प्रतिष्ठा अस्पताल की फाइलों से भी तेज़ चलती है। उनसे मिलते ही भरोसा हो जाता है — आँख सुरक्षित हाथों में है। उत्कृष्ट कौशल और अद्भुत विनम्रता का यह संगम दुर्लभ है, और वे इसे सहजता से निभाते हैं।

7 फ़रवरी 2026, सुबह 11:30 बजे मैं अस्पताल पहुँचा। सर्जन ओटी में थे, इसलिए रेज़िडेंट ने हर 15 मिनट पर मेरी दायीं आँख में डाइलेशन ड्रॉप्स डालीं। एक अन्य रेज़िडेंट ने मेरा बीपी चेक किया — 130/80, सर्जरी के लिए उपयुक्त — और मेरी ब्लड रिपोर्ट भी सामान्य थी। इस बीच मेरी पत्नी दंत अस्पताल जाकर दाँत की कैप का माप देकर लौटी — मेरी आँख की नई कैप से पहले उसकी कैप तैयार हो रही थी!

इसके बाद मुझे ओटी के पास वाले कमरे में ले जाया गया, जहाँ एनेस्थेटिक ड्रॉप्स डाली गईं — बिना किसी वीरतापूर्ण इंजेक्शन के लोकल एनेस्थीसिया।

12:49 बजे मुझे ओटी में ले जाया गया। नेत्र सर्जन डॉ. विपुल प्रजापति ने संक्षेप में प्रक्रिया समझाई; मेरा एकमात्र काम था तेज़ रोशनी को देखना। डाइलेशन के दौरान 45 मिनट के इंतज़ार और ध्यान के बाद मैं पूरी तरह शांत था। सफेद कपड़े से शरीर ढक दिया गया, केवल दायीं आँख खुली — जैसे कोई वीआईपी विंडो हो।

ड्रॉप्स डाली गईं और पलक झपकने से रोकने के लिए एक छोटा रिंग लगाया गया। डॉक्टर ने धीरे-धीरे शुरुआत की, आँख को साफ किया, रोशनी पर ध्यान रखने को कहा और 1.9 मि.मी. का सूक्ष्म चीरा लगाया। मुझे एक पतली लाल रेखा दिखी और पलभर के लिए सूर्यास्त जैसा दृश्य भी। तरल बहता महसूस हुआ — मानो कानों तक पहुँच रहा हो। फेको तकनीक से प्राकृतिक धुंधला लेंस तोड़ा और निकाला गया, जगह साफ की गई और नर्स से लेंस का पैकेट खोलने को कहा गया। मैं ठीक से 1-2-3-4-5 गिन भी नहीं पाया था कि नया फोल्डेबल लेंस अंदर स्थापित हो चुका था। सर्जरी पूरी!

1:14 बजे मैं बाहर निकल आया — न दर्द, न खून, न कोई तनाव। सिर्फ़ 25 मिनट अंदर और वर्षों की स्पष्टता वापस। दुनिया अचानक पॉलिश की हुई लगने लगी। सफ़ेद सचमुच सफ़ेद दिखा, गहराई लौट आई और कॉलेज के दिनों में AMTS स्टैंड पर सबसे पहले अपनी बस पहचान लेने वाली यादें ताज़ा हो गईं।

संक्षेप में, मोतियाबिंद सर्जरी किसी ऑपरेशन से कम और पुराने ब्लैक-एंड-व्हाइट टीवी से सीधे अल्ट्रा HD में अपग्रेड जैसा अधिक लगी — फर्क बस इतना कि इस बार स्क्रीन मेरी अपनी आँख थी।
