In Our Sixties 😄

We are now in our sixties — well-seasoned by life’s journey, shaped by experiences, victories, mistakes, and countless cups of tea. Our spouse becomes our best judge… though friends also discover our “original version” if they travel with us for more than three days!

Our office life passes through good and bad moments, and unfortunately we often bring both back home. Many times we fail to switch roles — we retire from the office chair but not from the “boss mode,” and end up speaking to our life partner as if they are a junior staff member awaiting appraisal. At home, however, there is no HR department and no annual increment for good behaviour!

Instead of developing a taste for all kinds of food so everyone can enjoy their favourites, we slowly become loyal brand ambassadors of our own likes and dislikes — effectively issuing silent government orders to the kitchen. “Less oil, more salt, no sugar, extra ginger” becomes our constitution.

We respect our partner’s faith, yet sometimes skip accompanying them to temples, walks, or social visits — unintentionally sending a message of indifference. A little companionship matters more than perfect agreement.

And then come the classic “60s superpowers” — searching for spectacles while they are already on our head, lowering the TV volume for others but asking them to speak louder, and proudly announcing we don’t gossip… right after a 20-minute update on everyone’s children.

The beauty of the sixties is this: we finally realise life is not about winning arguments, but about sharing laughter, adjusting the remote without conflict, and occasionally saying, “You were right,” even when we are not entirely sure about it.

साठ के दशक में हम 😄

अब हम साठ की उम्र में हैं — जीवन की लंबी यात्रा ने हमें अच्छी तरह “सीज़न” कर दिया है। अनुभव, सफलताएँ, गलतियाँ और अनगिनत चाय के कप — सबने मिलकर हमें गढ़ा है। हमारा जीवनसाथी हमारा सबसे बड़ा जज बन जाता है… हालाँकि दोस्त भी हमारी “असलियत” तब जान लेते हैं जब हमारे साथ तीन-चार दिन यात्रा कर लें!

ऑफिस का जीवन अच्छे-बुरे पलों से गुजरता है, और अफसोस यह कि हम अक्सर वही सब घर भी ले आते हैं। कई बार हम अपनी भूमिका बदलना भूल जाते हैं — कुर्सी से तो रिटायर हो जाते हैं, पर “बॉस मोड” से नहीं। नतीजा यह कि घर पर जीवनसाथी से ऐसे बात करते हैं जैसे वह ऑफिस का जूनियर स्टाफ हो। जबकि घर में न कोई HR होता है और न अच्छे व्यवहार का वार्षिक इंक्रीमेंट!

हर तरह के खाने का स्वाद विकसित करने के बजाय ताकि सब अपनी पसंद का भोजन खा सकें, हम धीरे-धीरे अपनी पसंद-नापसंद के ब्रांड एंबेसडर बन जाते हैं — और रसोई पर मौन सरकारी आदेश जारी कर देते हैं: “तेल कम, नमक ज़्यादा, चीनी नहीं, अदरक डबल!” यही हमारा संविधान बन जाता है।

हम अपने जीवनसाथी की आस्था का सम्मान तो करते हैं, पर कभी-कभी मंदिर, सैर या सामाजिक कार्यक्रमों में उनके साथ नहीं जाते — अनजाने में उदासीनता का संदेश दे बैठते हैं। साथ चलना, सहमत होने से ज्यादा मायने रखता है।

और फिर आती हैं साठ की उम्र की “सुपरपावर” — चश्मा सिर पर रखकर उसे ढूँढना, टीवी की आवाज़ दूसरों के लिए कम करना और खुद कहना “जरा ज़ोर से बोलो”, और यह गर्व से कहना कि हम गॉसिप नहीं करते… फिर अगले बीस मिनट सबकी खबर सुनाना!

साठ की उम्र की असली खूबसूरती यही है कि हमें समझ आ जाता है — जिंदगी बहस जीतने के लिए नहीं, हँसी बाँटने के लिए है; रिमोट बिना झगड़े के पास करने के लिए है; और कभी-कभी यह कह देने के लिए भी — “तुम सही थे/थीं”… भले ही हमें पूरा यकीन न हो।
