चलो बुलावा आया है! जय माता दी।

चलो बुलावा आया है। जय माता दी। १९८६ में जब हम मसूरी से आर्मी अटेचमेन्ट के लिए जम्मू अखनूर क्षेत्र में आए थे तब माता वैष्णोदेवी के और बाबा भैरव के दर्शन का लाभ हुआ था। जवानी थी इसलिए एक ही दिन में १६*२, ३२ किलोमीटर का सफ़र नौ घंटे में पूरा कर दर्शन, प्रसाद का लाभ लिया था। तब गुफा स्थान में रखी तीन पिंडी में महाकाली, महालक्ष्मी (वैष्णवी) और महासरस्वती के दर्शन करने बहते पानी के पास से पेट के बल अंदर जाकर झुककर दर्शन कर घुटने के बल बाहर आए थे। प्रसाद में २, ३, ५ पैसे के सिक्के, प्रसाद और एक चुनरी भेंट मिली थी। भैंरो के धूएँ से भभूत मिली थी। सब लाकर माता जी को दिया था जो उन्होंने जीवनभर अपने पूजा स्थान में रखा था। 

आज १ मई २०२५, फिर मसूरी से माता रानी के दर्शन का योग बना। हम सब बेचमेट अपने भारतीय प्रशासनिक सेवा में प्रवेश के ४० साल पूरे करने की ख़ुशी में (२८-३० अप्रैल) इकट्ठा हुए थे और वापसी में मैंने माता रानी की ओर हमारा पथ मुक़र्रर कर रखा था। हमारा वंदे भारत ट्रेन में अंबाला से कटरा बुकिंग था। मसूरी से अंबाला कार से आए और केन्ट के २०० साल पुराने अंग्रेज़ों के ज़माने के सर्किट हाऊस में ठहरने का मौक़ा मिला। सिर्फ़ चार कमरे, एक विशाल मीटिंग कम भोजन कक्ष और बड़ा सा बाग़। यहाँ अंग्रेज़ महानुभाव ठहरते थे और आज़ादी के बाद राष्ट्रपति, प्रधानमंत्री, मंत्री जैसे महानुभावों ठहरते है। इसका बेड रूम कमसे कम ३०*२५ फ़ीट का, बाथरूम १८*१२, ड्रेसिंग और रूम का डायनींग और फेमिली रूम भी बड़े बड़े। कमरे में जहाँ हाथ पहुँचे कॉल बेल लगे है जिससे की महानुभाव को ओर्डरली को बुलाने उठने का कष्ट न करना पड़े। छत की उंचाई क़रीब ३२ फ़ीट, जहाँ से २० फूट लंबी पाइप पर पंखे लटकाये गये हैं। दिवारें इतनी मोटी की गर्मी में एसी की ज़रूरत न पड़े। 

ट्रेन स्टेशन यहाँ से दस मिनट दूर था और वंदे भारत ट्रेन वक्त पर थी इसलिए सुबह ८ बजे स्टेशन से हम कटरा के लिए बैठ गये। मोदी सरकार ने वंदे भारत ट्रेन सीरीज़ शुरू कर रेल यात्रा का रूख ही बदल दिया है। प्रभावी एसी ट्रेन, आकर्षक डिब्बे, साफ़ सुथरे टॉयलेट, स्वच्छ स्वास्थ्यप्रद भोजन, दरवाज़ों की ऑटो नियंत्रण; विदेश कहाँ जाना? अपना देश इतना विशाल और वैविध्यपूर्ण है कि पूरी ज़िंदगी सफ़र करे फिर भी यात्रा ख़त्म नहीं हो सकती। 

आज एक दूसरी ट्रेन के लेट चलते हमारी ट्रेन भी एक घंटा लेट हो गई। दोपहर सवा तीन बजे जैसे ही उतरे हमारे कोच के सामने एक इ-रिक्षा खड़ी थी। ₹५० सवारी में उसने हमें सामान समेत दो मिनट में एक्ज़िट पार कराया। बाहर कार खड़ी थी, जो हमें सीधे ही हेलिपेड ले चली। हमने अपना उपर ले जानेवाला सामान सॉल्डर बैग में अलग कर रखा था इसलिए दूसरी सामान बैग ड्राइवर को देकर हमने अपने झोले उठाए और प्रतीक्षा कक्ष में जा बैठे। तुरंत एजन्सी का एक कर्मी आया और कुल ₹८८४० की दो राउंड ट्रिप टिकटें काटी और हमें सीधे हेलिकॉप्टर में बैठा दिया। आगे पायलट के साथ एक पैसेंजर और पीछे हम दो और एक, और हमारे पीछे सामान के साथ एक बॉय, कुल छह लोग। 

हम अभी मिनट आधी मिनट में बैठे की हेलिकॉप्टर फूररर उड़ा और कुछ साँस ली और छोड़ी तब तक तीन-चार मिनट में उपर साझीछत हेलीपेट पर पंछी उतर गये। आगे तीन किलोमीटर सरलता से चलकर और साडे चार बजे हम माता रानी के दरबार में पहुँच गये। अंबाला से सुबह ८ बजे चले और आठ घंटे में एक यात्री के ५० डॉलर खर्च में हम यहाँ पहुँच गये। क्या इतनी सरल और सस्ती यात्रा विश्व के किसी दूसरे देश में हो सकती है? 

पहलगाम त्रासदी घटना की वजह से आज कल यात्री कम हुए वर्ना सीज़न में दैनिक पचास हज़ार तक की भीड़ हो जाती है। प्रशासन ने आवागमन ने रास्ते सुगम किये है। हमारे लिए भवन का १११ नंबर रूम खुला (किराया ₹२७००), हम फ़्रेश हुए और देवस्थान कर्मी की मदद से वीआईपी पथ से मातारानी के दर्शन का लाभ लिया। 

यहाँ मंदिर स्थानक में माताजी तीन पिंडी रूप में स्थापित है। हमारे दायें से महाकाली, बीच में महालक्ष्मी माँ वैष्णोदेवी और तीसरी पिंडी महासरस्वती। सामने पुजारी की बैठक और उसके कंधे के पीछे की जगह में धातु का एक छोटा शिवलिंग। हमने दर्शन किये, तिलक करवाया, माथा टेका, प्रसाद और चुंदरी चढ़ाई, मेवा सिक्के का प्रसाद पाया, बगल से बहते पानी का आचमन किया और बाहर आ गए। 

फिर हमने जनता जहाँ से आ रही थी उस मार्ग में जाकर भोजनालय, विश्राम, सोवेनियर शॉप इत्यादि व्यवस्था कि जायज़ा लिया। लोग भोजनालय में खा रहे थे और इधर उधर विश्राम स्थल पर आराम कर रहे थे। यहाँ बाहर सोनेवालो के लिए कंबल बाँटे जाते है। कुदरत का नजारा देखा तो चारों और पहाड़ियों के बीच बना यह धार्मिक स्थल बहुत ही रमणीय है। भैंरो पहाड़ी, शेषनाग पर्वत और मातारानी की बैठक, एक शुभ चंद्राकार में तीनों स्थित हैं और सामने खुला हुआ घाटी प्रदेश। हरियाली से भरी पहाड़िया, मंद मंद पवन और हल्के फूलके बादलों में छिपता और निकलता सूरज और मंत्रोच्चार से गुंजायमान वातावरण मन को प्रसन्नता से भर देता है। 

सरकार और यहाँ के सीइओ IAS अधिकारी अंशुल गर्ग और उनकी टीम ने यहाँ अद्भुत काम किया है। यात्रियों के लिए रास्ते चौड़े करवाए, उस पर शेड बनवाए, निवास स्थान बनवाए, लंगर खुलवाए, नियत दूरी पर शौचालय बनवाए, स्नान घर बनाए, हेलिकॉप्टर सेवा शुरू की, बैटरी कार सेवा शुरू की, भैंरो की पहाड़ी जाने आने उड़न खटोला लगवाया, एक और उड़न खटोला लग रहा है, टट्टु और पालकी सेवा भी उपलब्ध है, सब और सफ़ाई और स्वच्छता नजर आती है; मंदिर परिसर से लेकर कटरा तक सबकुछ बदलकर यहाँ यात्रियों के लिए सुविधाजनक कर दिया गया है। कर्मचारी भी कर्मयोगी बने है। 

हम दोनों ने आमजन के साथ बैठ छोले भटूरे (₹५५) और कॉफ़ी कोपेचीनो (₹३०) का आनंद लिया। हाँ, यहाँ मच्छर बहुत है। पानी और गटर की वजह से उनकी उड़ान संख्या बढ़ी है। आमजन बाहर ही विश्राम करते है इसलिए मच्छरों की उड़ान कम करने प्रशासन को कदम उठाने चाहिए।

योगसंयोग से आज गुजरात महाराष्ट्र स्थापना दिन, अंतरराष्ट्रीय मज़दूर दिन और मेरी अर्द्धांगिनी लक्ष्मी का जन्म दिन था। हमने महालक्ष्मी मंदिर परिसर की कॉफ़ी शॉप से एक छोटी केक ख़रीदी और भवन के कमरे में आकर हमारी सरल और सादगी की देवी लक्ष्मी का जन्मदिन मातारानी महालक्ष्मी (वैष्णोदेवी) परिसर में ही मनाया। 

भवन की पेन्ट्री में डिनर का प्रबंध था लेकिन भूख नहीं थी इसलिए नौ बजते ही हम निद्रादेवी को प्यारे हुए। रात क़रीब दो बजे आँख खुली तो बादल गरजने और वर्षा होने की आवाज़ आ रही थी। मैंने कमरा खोला और मौसम के बदलते रूख को देखा और फिर लेट गया। 

३.३० होते ही हर दिन के वक्त पर ज़मीं दिमाग़ी घड़ी ने उठाया और हम अपने सुबह के कार्य में प्रवृत्त हुए। लक्ष्मी उठते ही हम तैयार हुए और उड़न खटोले की ओर चलें। लेकिन रात में हुई बारिश और तेज आँधी की वजह से शायद उसकी बैटरी चार्मेंज न हुई हो या कोई फाल्ट आया हो, आज समय से नहीं चली कब चलेगी उसका भी जवाब नहीं थी सोचा इंतज़ार करने से अपने पैर भले। हम पैदल चल दिए। 

शुरू में तकलीफ़ हुई लेकिन जैसे जैसे चलते गए राह कटती गई और तीन किलोमीटर चलकर सबा आठ बजे भैरों देव के दर्शन कर लिए। तिलक लगा, माथा टेका, काला धागा बँधवाया, बगल के धूने से भभूत लगाई और दूसरी तरफ़ के रास्ते से साँझीछत हेलिपेड की ओर चल दिए। साडे तीन किलोमीटर चले तब हेलिपेड आया। पहुँचते ही हिमालयन कंपनी का हेलिकॉप्टर आया, हम बैठे और फूर्र कर नीचे आ गए। एक टेक्सी बुलवाई थी, उसमें सामान लगाया, बैठे और श्रीनगर की ओर रवाना हो गए। 

कितना सरल, सुगम, आह्लादित करनेवाला था यह सफ़र! मातारानी का बुलावा हो और कष्ट सब मिट जाए यही उनका प्रसाद है। प्रेम से बोलो जय माता दी।

The Divine Call Has Come – Jai Mata Di

When the Divine Mother calls, one must go. Jai Mata Di!

In 1986, when we came from Mussoorie to the Akhnoor sector of Jammu for our Army attachment training, we had the blessed opportunity to visit the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi and Baba Bhairav. We were young then, and completed the 32-kilometre round journey (16 km each way) in just nine hours. We had darshan, received the sacred prasad, and felt immensely blessed.

In those days, devotees entered the original cave shrine by crawling through a narrow passage beside the flowing stream, almost on their stomachs, to bow before the three sacred pindis representing Mahakali, Mahalakshmi (Vaishno Devi), and Mahasaraswati. After offering our prayers, we emerged on our knees. The prasad consisted of small coins of 2, 3 and 5 paise, sweets, a sacred chunari, and holy ash (bhabhoot) from Baba Bhairav’s sacred fire. I carried everything home and offered it to my mother, who preserved these sacred items in her prayer room throughout her life.

Nearly four decades later, destiny again blessed us with an opportunity to visit Mata Rani.

All our IAS batchmates had gathered in Mussoorie from 28–30 April to celebrate the completion of forty years since joining the Indian Administrative Service. While returning, I had already planned that our journey would continue towards Mata Vaishno Devi.

Our Vande Bharat train was booked from Ambala to Katra. We drove from Mussoorie to Ambala and had the privilege of staying at the 200-year-old British-era Circuit House in Ambala Cantonment. With only four rooms, a grand dining-cum-conference hall, and a sprawling garden, it was once reserved for senior British officials. After Independence, it has hosted Presidents, Prime Ministers, Union Ministers, and other distinguished dignitaries.

The bedroom measured nearly 30 × 25 feet, with an 18 × 12 feet bathroom, a spacious dressing room, dining room, and family room. Call bells were installed within arm’s reach throughout the room so that distinguished guests would not need to get up to summon the orderly. The ceilings rose nearly 32 feet high, from which ceiling fans hung on long 20-foot rods. The walls were so thick that even in summer, air conditioning was hardly necessary.

The railway station was just ten minutes away. Our Vande Bharat departed exactly on time at 8:00 a.m.

The Modi Government has truly transformed railway travel through the Vande Bharat series. Efficient air-conditioned coaches, attractive interiors, spotless toilets, hygienic meals, and automatic doors have completely changed the travel experience. Why look abroad for tourism? India itself is so vast and diverse that one could spend an entire lifetime travelling across it and still not see everything.

Due to another delayed train, our train reached Katra an hour late. As soon as we stepped out around 3:15 p.m., an e-rickshaw was waiting outside our coach. For just ₹50 per passenger, it transported us along with our luggage to the station exit within two minutes.

A car was already waiting outside and drove us directly to the helipad. We had separated our essentials into shoulder bags, leaving our larger luggage with the driver. An agency representative immediately arrived, issued our two round-trip helicopter tickets for a total of ₹8,840, and escorted us straight to the helicopter.

There were six people on board—the pilot, one passenger beside him, the two of us in the rear, another passenger, and a staff member with the luggage.

Barely had we settled into our seats when the helicopter lifted off. Before we could even complete a deep breath, within three or four minutes we had landed at Sanjichhat Helipad.

After an easy three-kilometre walk, we reached Mata Rani’s holy shrine at about 4:30 p.m.

We had left Ambala at 8:00 a.m., and within eight hours—and at a cost of roughly US$50 per person—we had reached one of India’s holiest pilgrimage sites. Can such a convenient and economical pilgrimage be found anywhere else in the world?

Because of the tragic Pahalgam incident, the number of pilgrims was comparatively low. Otherwise, during the peak season, daily footfall can exceed 50,000 devotees. The administration has made remarkable improvements to the pilgrimage route.

We were allotted Room No. 111 in the Bhavan (₹2,700). After freshening up, a temple official helped us take the VIP route for darshan.

Inside the sanctum, the Divine Mother is worshipped in the form of three sacred pindis—Mahakali on the right, Mahalakshmi (Mata Vaishno Devi) in the centre, and Mahasaraswati on the left. In front sits the priest, and behind his shoulder is a small metallic Shivling.

We offered our prayers, received the sacred tilak, bowed before the Goddess, offered our chunari and prasad, received dry fruits and sacred coins as blessings, sipped the holy water flowing beside the shrine, and came out spiritually fulfilled.

Later, we walked along the route used by ordinary pilgrims to observe the arrangements. We visited the food court, resting areas, souvenir shops, and other facilities. Pilgrims were enjoying meals while others rested peacefully. Blankets are provided for those sleeping outdoors.

The natural beauty is breathtaking. Surrounded by green hills, with Bhairav Hill, Sheshnag Mountain, and the shrine of Mata Rani forming a graceful crescent, and an open valley stretching before them, the setting is simply enchanting. Gentle mountain breezes, drifting clouds, sunlight playing hide-and-seek, and the continuous chanting of sacred hymns fill the heart with peace and joy.

The Government and the Shrine Board, under the leadership of IAS officer Anshul Garg and his dedicated team, have done exceptional work. The pilgrimage paths have been widened and covered with protective sheds. Accommodation has been expanded. Community kitchens (langars), toilets, bathing facilities, helicopter services, battery-operated vehicles, the ropeway to Bhairav Temple, pony and palanquin services—all have been thoughtfully developed. Another ropeway is also under construction. From Katra to the Bhavan, everything has been transformed for the comfort of pilgrims. Cleanliness is visible everywhere, and the employees truly work in the spirit of Karma Yoga.

Like any ordinary pilgrim, we sat among the public and enjoyed chhole bhature (₹55) and cappuccino (₹30). However, one issue deserves attention—there are too many mosquitoes, probably due to stagnant water and drains. Since many pilgrims rest outdoors, the administration should take effective mosquito-control measures.

By a happy coincidence, the day also marked Gujarat and Maharashtra Foundation Day, International Labour Day, and the birthday of my better half, Lakshmi.

We bought a small cake from a coffee shop in the Bhavan complex and celebrated the birthday of my simple and graceful Lakshmi in the sacred abode of Mahalakshmi (Mata Vaishno Devi) herself.

Dinner was available in the Bhavan pantry, but we were not hungry. By 9:00 p.m., we retired for the night.

Around 2:00 a.m., I awoke to the sound of thunder and rain. I stepped outside briefly, watched the changing weather, and returned to bed.

At 3:30 a.m., as always, my internal clock woke me. After our morning routine and preparations, we headed towards the ropeway. However, due to the previous night’s heavy rain and strong winds, it was not operational. Nobody could say when it would resume. We decided that instead of waiting, it was better to trust our own feet.

The climb was difficult initially, but gradually became easier. After walking about three kilometres, we reached Baba Bhairav’s temple at around 8:15 a.m. We received the sacred tilak, bowed before the deity, tied the traditional black thread on our wrists, applied the holy ash from the sacred fire, and then proceeded via the other route towards Sanjichhat Helipad.

After walking another three-and-a-half kilometres, we reached the helipad. Soon a Himalayan Heli helicopter arrived. We boarded, and within minutes were back at the base. Our taxi was waiting. We loaded our luggage, got in, and set off towards Srinagar.

What an effortless, comfortable, and spiritually uplifting pilgrimage it had been!

When Mata Rani herself calls, every difficulty melts away. That is Her greatest blessing.
