An Encounter with Death

(In the style of a quatrain)

The sewers of Gandhinagar had grown old and frail;
Though rebuilt anew, they brought fresh travail.
The road was paved, yet the pathway marred,
The footpath lay open, broken and scarred.

Dhaval had gone away to Saurashtra’s land;
I thought I’d repair the path with my own hand.
The task was simple, with nothing to fear,
Until some tiny insect stung me there.

By dawn my finger had swollen tight;
The index finger throbbed with pain outright.
As the day advanced, the agony grew,
And peace of mind quietly withdrew.

Medicines and dressings—all were tried,
Yet the poison lingered deep inside.
The doctor said, “An incision is due.”
I replied, “Do whatever you must do.”

Three injections came, then a deeper cut;
The hidden infection was finally let out.
They wished to numb my finger awhile,
But the pain burned fiercely all the while.

Groaning, I returned back home,
Sat upon the sofa, weary and alone.
I asked for water, warm and mild;
The moment I drank, darkness compiled.

Awareness vanished; the body untied,
As though the senses had all slipped aside.
It was not sleep, but a fathomless void;
When I awoke, only vision survived.

Again, consciousness seemed to descend;
Sweat covered my body from head to end.
My hands turned cold, my feet were still;
Lakshmi and Ujjwal watched with anxious will.

Pulse, oxygen, blood pressure—they checked them all;
They laid me gently upon the cot’s broad wall.
Slowly awareness returned once more;
A cup of coffee restored the core.

Soon everything appeared as before,
Yet something within was unchanged at its core.
In that fleeting instant when consciousness fled,
I had touched the very threshold of death.
